I keep trying to open a dialogue with publishing professionals, but I am essentially a no one, and I've been repeatedly ignored.

Yeah this is borderline enraging. They're going to try to extend this to artwork too, I bet. And I have posted hundreds of my works online. I can't register all of those. This is fucking ridiculous. All so corporations can make more money.
I'm glad to see this... But I'm also angry that it needs to happen. We've been told we get automatic copyright, but now we're being told it's useless protection if it's not registered.
It'll cost me $750 to register all my published work, not including my website. I can't afford that.

Update: we just received a statement from Macmillan/Tor taking full responsibility for failing to register copyright, promising to make us whole and pay us any settlement money we lost out on due to that error, and promising to find & correct the lapses that caused this.

Today is the day authors are learning how many of their publishers straight up blew off registering copyright and I feel like that deserves a class action suit of its own if it costs everyone their settlement money from the Anthropic suit... 😒🤬
Tor just straight up didn't register the copyright for two of our books, even though they were contractually obligated to do so.
