only YOU can diagnose DRESS syndrome! (Drug Rash with Eosinophilia & Systemic Symptoms)

this is often *not* a dermatology diagnosis- rash & path can be nonspecific

diagnosis often hinges on visceral involvement (eosinophilia, atypical lymphocytosis, liver injury, drug exposure history) #EMIMCC
Acute Liver Failure + Rash

🫢Rash, ALF, PSE, with - w/u

😄Turns out was on allopurinol

👍DRESS, responding to steroids

Unusual to have DRESS ➡️ ALF

Do you know the symptoms of DRESS Syndrome and the medications that commonly cause it? Lamotrigine is a frequent culprit.

In today's Morning Report, I learned that DRESS is associated with the reactivation of herpesviruses, particularly HHV-6.

Whether this or other herpesviruses are part of the pathogenesis of DRESS or a consequence of DRESS remains unsettled.
