Leaders have to focus on trying to LISTEN more and PERSUADE less. In 2021, we asked research participants to write an obituary for the current political system. Here's a snapshot of what we heard.
The Wisconsin political system died because no one trusted it. It was overthrown by protesters and activists. No one came to the funeral - except the wealthy white folks that benefit from it and won't know how to move forward without it. People who live at the margins were excited it was gone and for the potential to build a new one. No one would cry, except a few white fragile tears. The wealthy whites would be in the will and continue to benefit for generations. - Latino/a/x voter United States Democracy, age 245, died a slow and painful death on the streets of Washington, DC. The system was strong, resilient, and consistently in contradiction of itself. For many years, the system was held in high esteem by nations across the world despite its many flaws. In recent years, those flaws grew too many to ignore. At the hands of rebel groups who plotted for years to take the system down from within, the United States Democracy was proven not to be a democracy at all. In its passing, it leaves behind an ailing economy, systems of oppression, and a shattered American dream. - Young Black voter The Political System in Wisconsin died on 1/1/2022 after a long and heroic battle with end-stage capitalism and political theater. Very few attended the service as most citizens already believe it had been dead for quite some time. The 1% was also surprisingly absent as their private security forces were not allowed on the grounds while heavily armed. Politicians from each party stopped by to take photos next to its casket and then promptly left. The middle class was absent as it stopped existing quite some time ago. The working class could not attend due to the potential loss of the slave wages they and their families struggle to subsist on.  - Young white voter
