I just don't get why all of a sudden diversifying traffic sources is a big deal! For as long as I've been doing SEO audience discovery has been the difference between losers and winners mainly because SEARCH is always changing and many sites using only search are a MAJOR UPDATE away from BANCRUPTCY!
Emina Demiri-Watson (@eminadw.bsky.social) believes that whether you call it SEO, SXO, or OSO (Organic Search Optimisation), it's not just about Google anymore, it's about showing up wherever your audience searches.

I agree w/all of this! In particular statements about AI SERPs becoming more explorative. IMO, this is why agentic AI will not perform as anticipated! The web has always been and always will be about people exploring topics. FOMO will be Agentic AI downfall. ie: did Agentic AI provide the best sites

What this post says about social media and the web is so true! However it misses the main point which is the algorithms that decide what you see on Social platforms leverage these qualities to the point that it is having a very negative impact on heavy users especially younger users!
The intellectual obesity crisis, really good reflective read on what content we choose to consume.

Users do not pay for things they DON'T VALUE! This is what many SEOs who tout the future of AI fail to understand. People who do not get or NEED a positive productivity gain from AI will never pay!

Also the same SEOs think everyone is lazy and wants an agentic web... IMO, another major flop also!

After HCU there is a good argument for the same being true for focusing on a topic for a website. There are also clues in the Google leaked doc where there is clear indication the original topic of a site is tracked.

IMO, Narrow focus with high level of expertise is a key to a website's success!
Ed Ziubrzynski explains that authority comes from focusing on a topic. When you examine an author's profile, you ideally want it to be dedicated to one or two particular subject areas.

I don't believe this post just relates to news and Publishers!

IMO, the challenges AI provides varies from one type of site to another, however, the way you manage AI challenges and "make your site pay" is usually the same for every site.

This is a must read for SEOs

Awesome post by Ian! My experience w/OpenAI collecting entities/embeddings has been excellent. I'd do the GSC, rankings etc. in Screaming Frog as I always found having all the data in a single DB a huge value. I hate Google sheets and believe that exposes your data to prying eyes of the Gorg!
AI can't do content audits, OK? You CAN build a pretty nifty assistant, though, that helps you do audits better. I built one using Claude, ScreamingFrog, Zapier, and Google Sheets. You can read how (and how AI drives me nuts) here: www.ianlurie.com/content/audi...
How to: Audit existing content using ScreamingFrog and AI
You can’t build an AI content auditor. You can build an AI content audit assistant that analyzes your site’s existing content, traffic data, and crawl data for opportunities. I’ll show you how I do it...

I worked in SEO through the Internet Bubble this blurb by Sam Altman was often heard:

"it's also unprecedented for companies to be growing revenue this fast."

Consider this fact:
OpenAI's revenue is growing quickly, but it has never turned a profit.

Sounds familiar!

The craziest part of Trumps tariffs is that if housing starts go back to normal the only way to meet the lumber demands is to cut down the trees in US National Parks because Ca. lumber producers are being put out of business by ridiculous tariff rates & substantial increase in US housing costs!

Intrigued by:
1. Fair, non-discriminatory ranking and greater transparency around how results surface, including limits on self-preferencing.
2. Publisher controls over how content is used in AI outputs and summaries.

HCU could be argued to discriminate against SOME sites where ad size & location

Re: query fan-out (the newest AI topic) & it occurs to me that SEOs should have been already doing what is being touted as new. If you were optimizing for "passage indexing" & were paying attention to guidance that topical content should FULLY COVER a topic in one page. You got fan-out covered!

Not only is it overrated it is actually a 20+ year old SEO/Web Development technique! It is hilarious that almost every supposedly "new" GEO/AEO technique is just an old SEO technique dressed up as new w/a shitty new name often stolen from another computing discipline.

Mail box full of pitches for GEO apparently "the future of SEO" from a bunch of SEO pretenders.

Been doing this "thing of ours" before it had a name & I've never seen this volume of PURE CONJECTURE stated as FACT.

Remember the guys implementing AI admit they do not have clue 1 how it works...

This interview is discussing the uncontrollability of AI. Given the Google quest for $'s at any cost I fear this will not end well!

AI is subsidized by everyone but the fcks stealing content!

"Meanwhile, Monitoring Analytics, the independent market watchdog for the mid-Atlantic grid, produced research in June showing that 70% — or $9.3 billion — of last year's increased electricity cost was the result of data center demand."

Same here but SEOs don't get good or nice things cause they tend to break them! However, seeing Donna is involved some consideration for the mindless unwashed masses has been built into it. :-)
I love this. I hope it takes off.

To say this is overdue is a gross under-statement! US should be even bigger, however, the GRIFTER POTUS has likely already been compensated to stop it... like the way he extorted Ca. gov't to drop the Digital Tax Act to benefit the Google's and other Internet exploiters of the world!

1 of the many ways Google inflates searches w/ BS! All in the name of putting one over on the morons on Wall street. cuz that's all these IDIOTS really look at... that & gap between them and M$ on Cloud services and AI.

Great points in this post! However, even client education required to lead clients has become more complex. Lack of TRUSTED tools and/or data to determine opportunity, result longevity and measure effectiveness in order to gain the trust of clients is an issue.
Sure, let’s just keep doing keyword audits. I’m sure that’ll help when your content doesn’t even show up in AI answers.
SEO got complex. Fast.
