People yelling, "Bad people like this art, therefore the art is bad!" is one of the weakest, worst trends in appreciation and critique of art and I am sadly convinced we will never be free of it.

I particularly hate the suggestion there's some sort of grand bargain in which trans rights are given up in exchange for _______.

No one is offering such a thing. No one would change their vote to Dems after that. The argument exists solely to justify throwing trans people under the bus.
the harris campaign said the “they/them” ad didn’t sway the election.

one of the trump campaign’s top strategists this week said trans rights isn’t in the top five issues for swing voters.

when will the press stop talking about us like we’re a liability and start looking itself in the mirror

If your job application includes both "trans" and "woman" as separate options in a question about "gender identity" where only one answer is allowed, I'm gonna pick "woman"

I am trans as a byproduct of having a female gender identity, it is not my gender identity in and of itself

Harris-Walz ran exactly the sort of economics and “kitchen-table issues” campaign these voices recommend, adamantly avoiding identity politics.

Biden-Harris was a working-and-middle-class-economics-focused administration.

“Ah, but in 2020, Democrats said…”

Yes, that was the election they won.

As Julia Serano noted, if some kind of trans grand bargain were actually on offer regarding sports or whatever, it might make sense to take it. But it's not on offer! The other side is pretty clear about wanting the elimination of trans people.

I'm not a New Yorker but I deeply want this man to win, if nothing else bc he is a perfect example of how you can

1) stand up for trans rights, immigrants' rights, etc

2) make the focus of your campaign the affordability issues that plague this country (esp. in NYC!)

You can do both! Vote Zohran!
Nothing is inevitable. Effort is everything. Ignore the polls and run through the tape.

when these rules actually come out, they will be open for public comment and all of us need to flood submissions, call our reps, make noise, everything including the kitchen sink

unconscionable evil

tossing a food bank a couple bucks won’t turn SNAP on.

but you personally can’t turn SNAP on, and you maybe can toss a food bank a couple bucks.

SNAP is probably the most effective federal dollar we spend in terms of long term domestic economic outcomes.

that isn’t why you should support it; you should support it because it is a moral imperative to feed the hungry.

but it’s why even a growth-oriented ghoul shouldn’t oppose it.

It's cliché at this point, but it's true: if your vote didn't matter, Trump and co. wouldn't be working so hard to take it from you. Let that galvanize you. Vote. Organize. Protect democracy. There's hope out there, and it's worth defending.
Test run for 2026. Here's what I wrote in the NY Times about the federal government potentially interfering with the 2026 elections and what we need to do about it. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/20/o...

Trump, apparently, loves neoclassical architecture so much he tore down a third of the nation's premier example of it
Stephen Miller: "The scandal is how Democrats & the left scarred the landscape of our country w/grotesque so-called modern art that celebrates ugliness ... very importantly, President Trump is making sure it's in the neo-classical design around which our nation's architecture has long been directed"

Remember all the complaints & memes from the SJW/anti-SJW war about how "you built your own space, now we demand you let us in, change everything to suit our tastes, & then kick you out bc you don't belong here anymore"?

Yeah, this is right-wingers salivating over the chance to do that to Star Trek
I would love Discovery, the Acolyte, and the Star Wars sequels out of spite if I could.
October 24, 2025 at 11:00 PM
On the one hand, sure, I think Trump in 2016 benefitted from a smokescreen of ppl calling everything right-of-center Nazi, fascist, etc. OTOH, now, w/Republicans by and large falling over each other to implement Trump's fascism, that "smokescreen" seems like it might've been an early warning system.
That social consensus was destroyed by 10 years of people calling everyone they didn't like "Nazis" and "fascists", and it's not coming back. If you spend years labelling normal things as "Nazi," you make Nazis look normal.
October 24, 2025 at 10:48 PM
Regardless of how you feel about Will Stancil, replying to him w/Nazi memes is a bad look.

If we want to rebuild the societal consensus that Nazis=bad, & we absolutely need to, we need to start w/ourselves. We cannot credibly oppose Nazis if we adopt their memes (or, for that matter, their tattoos)
so basically some nazi made this and several thousand people spam it to reply to every will post on twitter and now people on here are doing it and getting butthurt about it if you call them nazis

it is very weird. it's a nazi cartoon. spamming this specific meme at will is a nazi meme.

just in general, as a victim of bullying for much of my life, and as someone who lives in a country taken over by bullies, i simply do not agree that "we should go back to stuffing nerds in lockers" or that there's a moral quality that makes you deserve cruelty from others because you annoy them

I remember when everyone agreed that's what transgender people are

I don't think bullies are generally good people at all, in fact

George Lakoff wrote in Don't Think of an Elephant that, as soon as Nixon said "I am not a crook," his career was over. Any denial that specific was going to make people see the obvious: Nixon was a crook.

Because it's leaving Netflix, & against my better judgment, I'm watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for the first time since I was a little kid & it scared me half to death. (I maintain that any movie in which 4 kids are killed off 1 by 1 according to their sins is a fucking horror movie)
