Now that there’s a congestion charge to enter Lower Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn has unequivocally taken the crown as the traffic clusterfuck of the city - desperately need a separate congestion zone here.

The weekend @mta continues to be a complete shitshow. A dreaded 2-transfer trip for me today. Either major planned work/suspension or a major delay on all 3 lines. Slow zones. Escalators down everywhere. The payoff for all these purported upgrades needs to fucking happen faster, I’m done waiting.

You know - shit happens (it happens far too often in this system, alas) - but what really gets my goat is how fucking slow they are to update status

New: After Renee Nicole Good was killed by an ICE agent, right-wingers attacked and mocked her sexuality, motherhood, and politics. Other protesters are being told to "learn" from her death. @parkermolloy.com reports on this aggressive smear campaign: www.wired.com/story/the-ca...
The Campaign to Destroy Renee Good
After an ICE agent shot and killed the Minneapolis mother, conservative media launched an all-out attack on her reputation. Her identity as a queer woman was central to it.

As usual, the story here isn't about "divides" or cosmopolitan elites looking down on rural populations. It is about radicalization. This woman wants violent vengeance for things that did not happen.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

Minneapolis is headed towards something resembling a general strike, if you were wondering how the campaign to cow working people into quiescence is going
Last night, The Minneapolis Federation of Educators Local 59 signed on to the call for a Jan 23 shutdown. That brings total labor support to: the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1005, SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, CWA Local 7250, St. Paul Federation of Educators Local 28, and the MFE 59
Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager

every elected with an ounce of ambition should see this as the opportunity of a life time if they are willing to break the mealymouthed consensus of mediocre substackers and instead listen to the polls heralding incandescent rage
People who want to be elected to high office usually want to make history - in a way in which they are fondly remembered as examples of great leadership.

Our leaders have now been granted the rare chance to make such history.

They must find the courage to take that chance.

Just heading down a path of total isolation (and therefore economic and cultural irrelevance) on a number of fronts
US government's policy toward the Big 3 automakers—encouraging them to invest in massive, US-only SUVs & trucks, now encouraging them to underinvest in EVs—has reinforced their global irrelevance.

Ford sold 33% fewer vehicles worldwide in 2024 than 2015! GM sold 40% fewer vehicles!

ICE must be abolished. It has become a lawless, rogue agency. Federal law enforcement agencies must follow the law, if they're going to have any credibility enforcing it.

We are demanding justice for Renee Good and the prosecution of ICE agent Jonathan Ross for her murder.

A competent opposition political party would cut together the footage of what ICE had been doing in the twin cities with Mike Johnson saying "ICE is doing what ICE is designed to do" and have it in ads all across the country
Mike Johnson comes out against additional guardrails on ICE as Democrats call for it.

“I think there's a lot of Democrats playing games right now with national security and with law enforcement. And I think it's dangerous. Ice is doing what ice is designed to do by its very name.”

This is how far you have to scroll on the NYTimes homepage to get any coverage of what's going on day-to-day in an occupied American city where schools are closing because the government is checking the papers of all brown or Asian people then brutalizing, imprisoning or killing them.

You could be next.
