Our artist of the week is the fantastic Sophia George! Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica and born on 21 February 1964, she rose to prominence in 1985 when her hit single “Girlie Girlie” climbed all the way to the top of the Jamaican charts.

Released in 1971, Bob and Marcia’s upbeat single 'Pied Piper' followed their hit rendition of '(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black'. The track cemented the duo’s place in the British music scene, winning over audiences as it climbed the UK charts.

57 years ago today, Derrick Morgan released 'Fat Man', one of the first Jamaican records to be issued in the UK. The track was an immediate success, climbing to the top of the charts in Jamaica and making waves internationally.

Back in 1968, Bob Andy joined forces with Marcia Griffiths to record a reggae take on Nina Simone’s anthem ‘(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black’. A celebration of Black pride and empowerment, the track became a worldwide success, climbing to number 5 in the UK charts in 1970.
