It's the "We know everything so..." attitude of almost every newspaper headline that I find so annoying. As an old adman, you were taught to avoid anything that you could add the words, "You idiot".

When I arrived in Ireland (Belfast)as a student, the local press was dominated by a discussion of whether children should be allowed to use the swings in the park on Sundays. Amazingly (and providentially) I chose to stay.

A bit more liberal representation maybe, but if you think any other change is going to make things better, you don't have all your chairs in your house.

The BBC, during the newspaper strike in 19.. something, found Ronald Fraser (character actor, 1930 - 1997) about to catch a train. He had chosen as his reading for the journey, in the absence of the mainstream press, a copy of a magazine called Red Mole, and he was finding it 'very informative'.

The biggest scandals these days seem minor. No more giving your pals access to government spending - even in an emergency. No more hare-brained schemes like Rwanda. Thank goodness for some sanity and competence.
