Dear MAHA—you’ve been conned by Trump and RFK Jr… food safety laws now decimated by industry lobbyists for their profits and your future diarrhea. Fun fact— food borne illness already surging since EFK Jr slashed CDC tracking system for food borne outbreaks. www.levernews.com/shutdown-dea...
Shutdown Deal Kills Food Safety Rules
After lobbyists spent big on the Trump administration and Democratic defectors, the government funding bill cut food-contamination rules and limited ultraprocessed-food research.

Who needs university-trained economists when you have DoorDash data?

Sadly, this outcome is not surprising. Under fascist regimes (and, more broadly, under authoritarian systems), data about a country often becomes more scarce, less reliable, or tightly controlled.

“We’re afraid of walkable distances now?” I was one of the first to go after the liars & conspiracy theorists who targeted the “15 Minute Cities” message. Here’s my interview with Aussie National Radio with @greenj.bsky.social — give it a listen, and think about how we should push back on ALL lies.
'We're afraid of walkable distances now?' — conspiracies and the '15-minute city' - ABC listen
The polite world of urban planning has become the latest target of conspiracy theorists. In recent weeks, the 15-minute city concept — where neighbourhoods provide life's essentials in 15 minutes by f...

A related thought is that not everyone gets to have freedom of movement. Car drivers fight to keep their "freedom" at the expense of others. People of color face restrictions in mobility both from infrastructure and policing. Like everything else in the U.S. freedom of movement is not equitable.
Somewhere along the way, freedom of movement became freedom from responsibility.

The search for a superior moral justification for selfishness has never idled this smoothly.

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

In Opinion

Early in Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, “it was easy to assume that failure to learn his name reflected a failure to take him seriously,” John McWhorter writes. But “as a matter of pure linguistics, it would be surprising if people didn’t have trouble with the name Mamdani.”
Opinion | I Now Mispronounce You the Likely Next Mayor of New York City
A lot of people seem to trip over Zohran Mamdani’s name. The reason may not be as simple as it seems.

Australian COVID-19 weekly stats update:

The risk estimate fell to 0.1% “Currently Infectious”, or 1-in-1058. That’s an all-time low since I started this analysis 3 years ago.

That implies a 3% chance that someone is infectious in a group of 30.
