I’m not a bot, I’m just tentatively waiting until this site reaches critical mass as opposed to X, and I’m indecisive as to what my avi should be.
This is kismet, because I checked out the (really nifty!) Other World podcast, which Libby recommended in your last Episodes post, & there's a series they do on a prolonged demonic possession/haunting in Toronto that very strongly reminded me of this flick. Spooky season coincidences!
wait I thought everyone was twelve, I can't keep track of things anymore
I was inspired by @duckfeedtv.bsky.social’s old regional arcade episodes to check out Can Can Wonderland in St. Paul, & if the dynamic duo ever find themselves there I can’t recommend it enough! Truly unique & Pee-Wee’s Playhouse-coded DIY, artist-forward, & non-irony poisoned entertainment abounds!
Not to diminish the wonderful & dependable work Kent is doing with these, as always! But if I had my druthers we’d be starting w/the much stronger first half of this decade
Is it just me or does the conversation w/these 2 seem rather tepid & half-hearted, for high-seeded LPs? I know it’s bad optics for 2 rare selections remaining by women (both of which I like okay!) but I’m taking it as evidence of my hot take that, few classics aside, 89 is a relatively weak year!
For me it’s Elmhurst and Hinsdale. My biggest shame
The football games are just a distraction
Baseball, but with problems fixed.

But he can’t do that!!! Did it. But he can’t do that!! Did it. But he can’t do that! Did it. But he can’t do that. Did it. But he can’t do. Did it. But he can’t. Did it. But he. Did it. But. Did it.

Why does everyone keep calling it “The Epstein Ballroom?” Please stop repeating “The Epstein Ballroom” because it is not called “The Epstein Ballroom!” Don’t tell the news that it’s called “The Epstein Ballroom” and please don’t repost this!!!!!
Can’t unsee Gillian Jacobs about to break at the very end
A 2000s rock revival thought: “Hate To Say I Told You So” & “Maps” both end almost identically notation-wise, but played in completely opposite manners.
It’s suspicious how billionaire playboy Blaine Capatch has never been seen in the same room with that Captain Bleach fellow 🤔
LOVE that essay. I no-kidding find myself frequently returning to your first-person nonfiction canon of Emily's Midwestern Malaise. Those pieces mean a lot to me!

I mean, the obvious first place with a bullet should be Brian Eno, but maybe I give him credit for being sort of known & more popular/respected than Adrian, & thus less qualified for the title? But Eno is a titan and genius of the art form, while Belew is merely strikingly multitalented.
In terms of the made up math comparing how discussed, popular, credited & respected someone is vs. their compositional, instrumental & creative talent plus contributions to the medium, sometimes I think Adrian Belew is the most underrated musical figure of the 20th century.
The bookending sample that makes the whole journey a closed loop of an awful cycle repeating, on personal and national levels, is especially affecting right now. Isn’t this where we came in?
This is a great summation of all their many musical tricks and strategies, with the genre based pushed into a more contemporary palette of new wave, disco, easy listening, pop theater, and confessional folk.
The fascinating & thorny thing about this rock opera to end all rock operas is how much is satirical unreliable narrator, is biographical reporting, is self reflexive artsy symbolism, and is uncomfortable nervy opinion.
Not to discount the undeniably masterful and hit packed first half, which importantly establishes the early in life misogyny, lack of education, and poor social conditions that can result in conservatism and other harmful delusions.
Crucial and upsetting key track is the reprise of In the Flesh, the exact dudebro nightmare carnival of casual holocausts we and much of the globe now lives under.
…before collapsing, as it must and should? Nothing could be closer to 2025. Sorry for doubting a masterpiece. Still my offhand answer for best album of the 70s, as we wait for the worms to stop.
The eerie, fragmented, self-pitying, isolated & deranged thought sketches jumping between imagined nostalgia, mental illness and processing trauma, all while multimedia sound bites are playing, eventually evolving into curdled vindictive fascism as a delusion of grandeur…
