Standing up to a tyrant - who is willing to impose pain as leverage to compel loyalty or acquiescence - is hard. You can convince yourself that yielding stops the pain and brings you back to "normal".

But there is no "normal". Submission emboldens the tyrant. The threat grows.

We are going to get played over and over and over as long as Schumer remains Senate leader. Prepare for more capitulations to come. He has to go. Now.

If outside moderate factionalists really want to disclaim this outcome, they should seize the whip hand in demanding accountability. Immediate new leadership elections, mid-session resignation for all Dem capitulators who would be replaced by Dem governors. www.offmessage.net/p/16-thought...

@govpritzker.illinois.gov tell @durbin.senate.gov to retire now. He’s worse than useless. It’s time he’s put out to pasture. Same goes for @duckworth.senate.gov if she doesn’t vote to remove Dick and Schumer from leadership.

People shouldn't forget that the first domino setting off tonight's capitulation came from the American Federation of Government Employees two weeks ago

Millions of American workers are now going to lose their health care

What ever happened to solidarity?

if you genuinely think Schumer and Democratic leadership opposed this & Republicans coincidentally got exactly the number of votes they needed to avoid a filibuster and none of those votes are from Democratic Senators who are up for reelection in the midterms next year, I have a bridge to sell you.

Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced. If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?

So the Dem #CaveCaucus aren't even getting a real vote out of their surrender:
♦️Without a House vote, any Senate vote is meaningless.
♦️And without at least 4 GOP crossovers, a Senate vote is meaningless too.
Q: Will you assure House Democrats they'll get a vote on ACA subsidies by a date certain?

MIKE JOHNSON: Ah -- no. I'm not promising anyone anything.

Not that he didn’t already know, but now Trump knows for sure he can roll the Dems every time and there’s no need to negotiate for anything

May this be the moment Democratic senators realize they are politically vulnerable if they stay silent and support the current awful leadership.

Since the Democrats worked extra hard to hide who actually supported this, I think the No Kings/Resistance position should be to primary every Democrat unless they publicly call for Schumer's ouster this week

Either they go into total rebellion mode, which they won't, or the people will

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

Yeah, I'm sorry, but you do not keep the government shut for more than a month and then NOT get a deal on the main item you have been messaging on without completely shifting the blame dynamic.
Major concession from Democrats here is enhanced ACA funds aren’t extended. Preserving them was Dems’ central demand in this fight. They secured a promise of a vote (which Thune has been offering for weeks), but that could still fail. Even if it passes, Johnson has made no promise of a House vote.
Tentative Senate deal to end shutdown, multiple sources tell me & @frankthorp.bsky.social:

—CR through Jan 30
—Approps minibus
—Fully funds SNAP
—Reverses Trump’s shutdown RIFs
—Promise of Senate vote on ACA subsidies by Dec second week (details/outcome uncertain)
—Led by King/Shaheen/Hassan

I'm unbelievably mad at Democratic leadership. That includes, first and foremost, Democrats who voted to capitulate. But it also includes those who organized the deal (Schumer) AND those who won't come out now and call for a change in Democratic leadership. Until there's a change, we're cooked.

Indeed. Until progressives in the Senate Democratic caucus directly challenge Schumer’s leadership it’s kind of hard to take their grousing seriously at this point. They are all in on this #SchumerSurrender politics.
Hey just a reminder that it only takes 23 Senate Democrats to remove and replace Chuck Schumer as minority leader. They don't do it because the majority of Senate Democrats approve of the way he does politics.

Stop calling capture “jurisprudence.”

Stop conferring symmetry where there is none.

Stop laundering tyranny as “Supreme Court decisions.”
