I wrote a book that I hope helps people think about the relationship between law, science, social movements, &political economy.

Nayra Guzmán was 15 days post C-section — going to see her baby in the NICU — when she was taken to Broadview and held in custody for about 34 hours.

She slept on a bench and barely got food. She couldn't pump.

Her story is a rare window into the growing detention of pregnant & postpartum people.

Her baby was in the NICU. She was in ICE detention.

Before Trump took office, postpartum immigrants were rarely detained by ICE. Nayra Guzmán was detained while her 15-day-old baby was in the NICU.

NEW: ProPublica has found multiple cases of women with underlying health conditions who died when they couldn’t access abortions.

Tierra Walker, a 37-year-old mother, was told by doctors there was no emergency before preeclampsia killed her.

“Ticking Time Bomb”: A Pregnant Mother Kept Getting Sicker. She Died After She Couldn’t Get an Abortion in Texas.

Walker is one of several women ProPublica found with underlying health conditions who died when they couldn’t access abortions.

This Research Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) with chapters exploring different facets of TWAIL scholarship. It covers major doctrines and topics of international law, as well as TWAIL perspectives on central historical and theoretical debates.

Expert authors present key insights into various themes that intersect with international law including economics, post-colonialism, religion, development, treaties, and human rights. The Research Handbook underscores the cornerstone concepts of TWAIL and examines their relationship with intellectual traditions such as Marxism and feminism. Contributing authors outline TWAIL’s perspectives on core areas of international law such as customary international law, treaties and human rights, as well as important contemporary issues, including debt, climate change, and public health. ICE’s own policies say the agency should not detain pregnant, postpartum or nursing individuals.

It’s doing so anyway. Immigrants’ health is suffering. Congress has abandoned a requirement that ICE make public how many such immigrants have been detained.
