Nayra Guzmán was 15 days post C-section — going to see her baby in the NICU — when she was taken to Broadview and held in custody for about 34 hours.

She slept on a bench and barely got food. She couldn't pump.

Her story is a rare window into the growing detention of pregnant & postpartum people.
Her baby was in the NICU. She was in ICE detention.
Before Trump took office, postpartum immigrants were rarely detained by ICE. Nayra Guzmán was detained while her 15-day-old baby was in the NICU.

There are many people who deserve to be celebrated and remembered.

Sarah Schulman pulled together an amazing archive of ACT Up advocates and her book recounts the organization's fight.  Check it out here: actupny.org
The ACT UP Historical Archive: ACT UP New York
act up is a diverse, non-partisan group of individuals united in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis

The book contains the stories of some of these activists:

Today is World AIDS Day. Activism was key to how the public came to know about AIDS and why $ and resources were dedicated to addressing the epidemic. My book documents some of the activists who brought about changes to science, medicine, and law.  www.cambridge.org/core/books/r...

ICE’s own policies say the agency should not detain pregnant, postpartum or nursing individuals.

It’s doing so anyway. Immigrants’ health is suffering. Congress has abandoned a requirement that ICE make public how many such immigrants have been detained.

ICE keeps detaining pregnant immigrants — against federal policy
But the number is impossible to measure since Congress let lapse a requirement that ICE report how many pregnant, postpartum and nursing immigrants are in custody.
