CPC-CG researchers analysed data about #publichealthfunerals (PHFs) from hundreds of Freedom of Information requests carried out by BBC South News.

The study also highlights an urgent need for national PHF data coordination and further research to forecast demand as deprivation and kinlessness rise
State-funded funerals on the increase across England
Tackling deprivation is crucial in reversing a rise in state-funded funerals, researchers say.

As we mark #WorldPopulationDay2025, find out more about recent CPC-CG research providing insights and policy evidence under this year's UN theme:

"Empowering young people to create the #families they want in a fair and hopeful world"

Image shows young office workers walking in the street on their lunch break next to a quote from Professor Jane Falkingham CBE, Director of the ESRC Centre for Population Change and Connecting Generations (CPC-CG), who notes: "Fertility decline is not simply a matter of choice. It reflects economic uncertainty, unaffordable childcare, precarious housing, and a mismatch between fertility intentions and the means to realise them. If young adults are to have the families they desire, we must listen to them and address the barriers they face. CPC and CG research continues to provide the data and insight needed to shape those solutions.”

On 12 May, Intergenerational England launched “A Divided Kingdom: Steps Towards #Intergenerational Solidarity” laying out how to move from fragmentation to solidarity across generations

Read and share:

#ADividedKingdom #IntergenerationalSolidarity
“I welcome this timely report because it highlights the urgent need to reconnect generations at a moment when social, economic and political shifts have deepened divides across age groups. At Connecting Generations, we examine how intergenerational ties shape and are shaped by key life events, and how these dynamics have been disrupted by national challenges such as Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as broader global challenges. This report reinforces our view that intergenerational connection is vital to personal wellbeing, social resilience and long-term fairness, and must be central to future policy thinking.” Professor Jane Falkingham CBE, Director of ESRC Connecting Generations

🗞️ New article on #pension reforms in @theconversation.com by @janefalkingham.bsky.social, Athina Vlachantoni & Yifan Ge @unisouthampton.bsky.social

"The government could play a critical part in evening out gender differences for the #Waspi women – and for millions of others coming up after them."
Denying compensation to ‘Waspi’ women over pension changes could be a missed opportunity
It could have been a first step in levelling the UK’s gender pension gap.

Let's find out more as we #MeetTheTeam...

Recent research by @janefalkingham.bsky.social and colleagues' has highlighted the growing financial and employment pressures on informal #carers in Britain.

Image shows page from the lates ChangingPopulations magazine. Headline reads 'Pressures on informal carers' over an image of a younger couple taking care of an older woman in a wheelchair on a UK street. Intro text reads: Research led by CPC-CG Co-
Director Professor Maria Evandrou and CPC-CG Director
Professor Jane Falkingham CBE further highlights the growing
financial and employment pressures on informal carers in
Britain.

The findings from several recent studies by Professor Evandrou
and Professor Falkingham with Dr Min Qin and Professor Athina
Vlachantoni reveal a widening gap in long-term care
preparedness, the incompatibility of social care cuts with
extended working lives, and the disproportionate impact on lone
parents and women. While the demand for informal caregiving is
increasing, many individuals remain unprepared for their future
long-term care needs, and policies aimed at promoting workforce
participation are clashing with the realities of caregiving
responsibilities. See section 4 at: https://sway.cloud.microsoft/CmZy5IKeGpRNyfAy?ref=Link&loc=play

Connecting Generations Meet the Team
Professor Jane Falkingham CBE
Professor of Demography and International Social Policy, University of Southampton
Role Summary: As PI of Connecting Generations, with my colleagues, I help shape the research we do and the impact it makes.
What inspired your work? Growing up, I became increasingly aware of inequalities, and how these accumulate across the life course. I wanted to do work that highlighted the changing needs of people at different stages of the life course and contributed to societal change.
What is the best part of your work? I still enjoy data analysis, especially when new findings are finally revealed.
What are you most proud of? Seeing my students grow and blossom and forge their own careers, both in academia and within the public and private sector.
