I often forgo elaborate backgrounds in favor of simple hatching, which does the trick pretty well.
So many of my strips feature nothing more than the characters, the dialogue, and said hatching. And I think I’m pretty happy with that. (And I think my readers are too!)

if you're one person making a comic by yourself, don't treat yourself like you should function on the same level as comics that have multiple people working on them. your backgrounds can be squiggles and colors.

Discovering even more powerful stuff that Krita can do! (I did the halftones and overprinting defects with built-in Krita filters, and no custom brushes were used, aside from the one used to make the lineart worn out.)
