Word is graduate school applications and competitiveness are up, with many bachelor's degree holders looking for a way to ride out the ice-cold job market.

ugh—after an update my Chrome is displaying washed-out black levels. Changing my monitor to HDR fixes it (but looks terrible, it's an LCD without local dimming), disabling hardware acceleration fixes it (but I need this), changing color profiles (system or in chrome) doesn't help.

Of course. Fedora is the best of the three important distros.

Being a CS undergrad at the time was interesting. November 30 2022, with two weeks left in the semester, I remember everyone simultaneously realizing that GPT-3.5 could finish the bulk of their final projects in a matter of minutes. AI was the only topic discussed for the rest of the year.

The ship sailed in 1993, atproto is a small but valuable part of it.

What I'm hearing is that the meta for getting hired right now is to have someone you've worked with before refer or recruit you to their current company. This is absolutely brutal for anyone young enough not to have an established professional network from the zirp era.

I’m always secretly excited when I get a weird camera glitch naturally, but here’s a normal one too

I love these liminal spaces when the direct sunlight hits ▛
A bright, modern institutional hallway with gray tile flooring and white walls. Dramatic diagonal shadows from large windows inset in the wall to the left side stretch across the floor, creating a striking pattern of light and dark. The corridor extends toward a glass window at the far end, with an outdoor area and street visible in the distance behind a chain link fence. The window is divided into quadrants, with the lower right being blacked out and the other three glass. Perpendicular corridors line the right wall, and a blue recycling bin sits against the left wall. Wall-mounted sconces above the windows on the left subtly illuminate the ceiling. Decorative blue and red striping runs along the upper right wall. The space has a clean, minimalist design with an exit sign visible above the top-right of the window at the back of the hallway.

Another one is night-sky photos that show stars. Along with the above, these are far more difficult to convincingly fake than, say, a person's face.

In the Sora era, straightforward photo/video reality-fingerprints are roads, signs, buildings, skylines, and mountain ridges. Every geographic feature and almost every city is mapped in 3D. This, however, requires an outdoor shot with some visible background detail and a fairly wide perspective.

Beautiful sky this evening—looks like we got some snow up there 🏔️
Aerial view of a mountain valley at sunset with snow-capped peaks bathed in warm golden light, pink and orange clouds hovering above the ridgeline, and an urban area spread across the valley floor below, with a highway winding through the developed landscape against a clear blue sky.

tasteful cache invalidation (frontend) is tricky, and it's not always entirely about maximizing some performance metric... users have learned to expect things to be cached and for the refresh to be visible (lends transparency to the software's inner workings).

I think there's definitely part of it that's learned, and you can get more precise by "memorizing" certain durations. From my experience if I bake a certain dish that takes 20 minutes in the oven, I can pretty accurately guess to within a minute or so when the timer is about to go off.

There exist time increments imperceptible to humans, e.g. if two events happen 50 microseconds apart, I can’t tell which was first, suggesting discrete steps. However, humans can also innately sense the passage of time (albeit imprecisely) without counting cycles or referencing external sources.
