3 Wishes Program
@3wishesprogram.bsky.social
End-of-life program in which HCWs elicit and implement small final wishes for dying patients and their families. Originated in Canada, now at UCLA, Beth Israel, Niagara Health, UW, University of Utah, and many others. #Humanism #Compassion #Kindness
A young daughter lost her father & co-wrote this beautiful song that integrated her father’s heartbeat in the background. May the beauty of this song in her favorite creature, a dragon, help her navigate the future.

Our @3wishesprogram.bsky.social music therapist worked with a family who lost a little boy named Sol. Changing the lyrics slightly, she and the family co-wrote a song to the rhythm of "You are My Sunshine". We will be mailing the parents his heartbeat recording & personalized song in this plush.

A volunteer artist created this painting for a family of a @3wishesprogram.bsky.social patient. The patient was a musician and physician, and the painting is perfect.

Look at this beautiful fingerprint painting that was done for a @3wishesprogram.bsky.social patient at LA General Medical Center! The patient loved Betty Boop and the color red.

The family requested that this image of a strong black woman be used to reflect their lost loved one. Our volunteer artist did a wonderful job incorporating her fingerprints into each step of the staircase.

A young mother dies and leaves behind 6 children. The children all wanted the fingerprint keychains and locks of hair. This story is so heartbreaking.

So much beauty, time, and attention to detail goes in creating these hand molds. This one is for a husband and wife holding hands for final time. #Kindness #EOLcare

So incredibly proud of medstudent Ami Tamhaney and music therapist Jenna Markovitz for presenting our work on heartbeat songs at the CSU Palliative Care Symposium! Not surprisingly, there was a lot of interest as well as a lot of tears!

A daughter shared with us how our teddy bear that contains her father's heartbeat sits atop her bedroom dresser--along with loving pictures and other mementos our @3wishesprogram.bsky.social provided. May these memories be a blessing. #EOLcare

One of the hospitals that has recently started @3wishesprogram.bsky.social has a large Catholic patient population. The nurses went above and beyond to give the family keepsakes that reflected their religion.

The dying patient's husband told their young daughter that we'd give her a teddy bear with the sound of her mom's heartbeat in it. The little girl asked if she can have it in PINK teddy bear because that was her mom's favorite color. So glad we found this one:

Dying in the hospital doesn't have to be cold and sterile. Sometimes a few decorations, twinkles lights, soft LED candles can help bring everyone a little peace and comfort.

The patient had wanted to go to #Hawaii before they became too ill. Our wonderful #ICU nurses decorated her room this way to bring the patient and her family some comfort during her final days.

Family describe her as devoted her daughter and husband. She was a neuroscientist who worked w/ children w/ learning disabilities & wanted to leave the world a little better than she found it. Our volunteer artist captured the request perfectly in this fingerprint painting.

We never thought that our program would need a presence on the Labor & Delivery Ward. But the reality is that intrauterine demises (stillbirths) can be absolutely devastating to expecting patient. Being able to take away a memory box and/or footprint can bring them a small comfort.

HCWs: Holidays are never fun to be working in the hospital. But let's be thankful that we are not the ones in the hospital bed nor the grief-stricken family by the bedside.

Here is a Christmas blanket for a dying @3wishesprogram.bsky.social patient. Final peaceful memories are important.

The couple were world travelers, particularly loved nature & animals. Their favorite is the panda. We were so glad to provide his grieving wife this plush that contained the recording of her husband's heartbeat that was recorded before he died.

She says: "I'll be listening it 'til the day I die"

The dying patient's son was turning 9 in a few days & had expressed that he was hoping to have his mother present at his party. Unfortunately, that wasn't going to happen. Instead, with his parents' permission, we had a small early birthday party for him in her room. Final #memories are precious.
