Hanwha is going to want to build something in Philly...the money has moved (though money also moved for decarb, and we blew that up at the IMO...)

Enough to put in a multi-fuel engine and plan to retrofit whatever else you need later? Does LNG still make sense?

Does the EU feel it has more latitude to move faster? For owners, the risk still remains - there is no clear and consistent global regulatory framework emerging. Where do you place your bets for newbuilds?

The arguments to include LNG and broader bio-fuels were not popular in Europe, but make sense for other states. Does the industry try to come together, or will nation states/blocs go ahead on their own? There is nothing to harmonize FuelEU or the EU ETS with now.

Some early-stage big questions as the cleanup begins:
1) Will Greece and Cyprus face any pushback from breaking with the rest of the EU?
2) Will the fast-moving states drop the IMO as a venue to coordinate decarbonization?
3) NZF was already a compromise. What comes next....

Neither does the water....

both USS Stark and USS Roberts, DDG-51 class USS Cole. This history fosters a distinct mentality that goes beyond rote code compliance. Although the smaller drones may change things - smaller, lower velocity warheads, waterline impacts etc. - probably not 12" belts again, but maybe more armor...

The focus on survivability in the USN design staff comes from history that shows that for USN designs it won't be theoretical. In the DDG/CG/FFG world, every recent class has been tested by a live warhead at least once. CG-47 class USS Princeton, FFG-7 class ...

Of course, while the staffers might like it, I'm sure I'd get endless hate mail about what I deemed to be frigate vs. destroyer vs cruiser...

Considering creating a resource for overburdened staffers... You need an "X" of nationality "Y" and it will return a correct, public domain, ship image.

That appears to be inspired by a very early USS Texas/USS New York, dating back to somewhere between its launch and the start of WWI.

Hmmm...Reagan's cuts to the subsidies were the final nail in the coffin, but there were many factors and missteps in the decades before. We need to understand the entirety of a successful maritime sector if we are going to rebuild one.

so let's hope none of us get hit by a bus any time soon, for more reasons than one.

still actively research and teach Ship Structures at a high level. I'm fairly sure it is less than 5 in the entire country (certainly at the R1 level). If you search for "USA" in the affiliation field of Marine Structures, you'll find only 4 articles for all of 2025...

Having watched my children work through high-school AP classes, there isn't much time for reading for pleasure at the end of a (very) long day.
