Today was my first day teaching Folklore Studies and Folklore Theory in the 2025 International Summer School at Xi'an International Studies University. I have a wonderful group of students, who are doing a great job of wading through tough ideas in a non-native language!

After my talk at #SIEF2025 in Aberdeen, I had a chance to visit to the Highland Folk Museum. Founded in 1935 and modeled on the Scandinavian open air folk museum concept, it presents buildings from different periods, including this stone thatched roof cottage, interpreted from the late 1800s.

I’m delighted. I’ve just received my pre-release copies of “Emerging Perspectives in the Study of Folklore and Performance” from Indiana University Press! It has been a joy and an honor to work with them, our wonderful authors, and my fantastic co-editor Solimar Otero.

Perhaps fortuitously, this month I happened upon a used copy of Wole Soyinka’s Climate of Fear, a series of essays given as the Reith Lectures at Oxford in 2004, while exploring bookstores in the area near my house.
