This part of Mishima’s Confession’s of a Mask is actually about cities pouring money into car-centric infrastructure
“This great factory operated upon a mysterious system of production costs: taking no account of the economic dictum that capital investment should producee a return, it was dedicated a to a monstrous nothingness. No wonder then that each morning the workers had to recite mystic oaths. I have never seen such a strange factory. In it all the techniques of modern science and management, together with the exact and rational thinking of many superior brains, were dedicated to a single end - Death. Producint the Zero-Model combat plane used by the suicide squadrons, this great factor resembled a secret cult that operated thunderously - groaning, shrieking, roaring. I did not see how such a colossal organization could exit without some religious grandiloquence.”

Issue 19 of the paper goes out tomorrow.

On the front Giancarlos Cininni dives into the city's 1.4 billion debt problems.

On the back @landofsticks.bsky.social explains how council has given up on Halifax Transit and road safety.

Grab it in your inbox or at Atlantic News.

They should put me to work on a low tech solution. i will roll big rocks in and out of the street as needed. Something something sisyphus

Anyway what surprised me most about this episode of the podcast was hearing a developer (Danny Chedrawe of Westwood Hills) advocate for wider sidewalks, better transit, and bike lanes. All these pictures are from a city with a third the population of Halifax, cars do not scale asmasstransitsendtweet

Road space allocated in a way I didn’t know was possible tbh. That wide strip next to the sidewalk is the bike lane. And then there’s more sidewalk separating it from the road. To also make it easy to get on the bus. Cool cool cooooool. When is it our turn to be happy?
A streer with more space for pedestrians and cyclists than for cars.

Actually functional ways of keeping cars out of the street. When you want. Can we have our cake and eat it too??
A sign explaining retractable bollards (sign is in German and reads “Poller”) Retractable bollards om a narrow road. There are many parked bicycles in the background

EV chargers in a neighborhood where I almost got hit by a bike several times and weaved around children playing ball in the road (both good things)

Some things I saw walking through Heidelberg today which enhanced the impact of listening to this episode:

If you listened to today's podcast early, you may want to go back and listen again. There are two additions in the latter half of the show and a new, mildly traumatizing homework assignment in the intro.

Sometimes municipal politics makes you reapply deodorant in the city hall bathroom to cover your stress sweat
But then sometimes you are reminded you’re still in a small city and councillors will shred at the local pump track. Yay

#Halifax regional council voted in favour of $50,000 in funding for the Davis Cup. My colleague @mmughees.bsky.social is working on a story for you for tomorrow.

I'll have other stories from council as well.
