Let’s be clear: the National Guard troops, federal law enforcement, and D.C. police cannot violate the Constitution or the D.C. Home Rule Act.

Understanding your rights can help you make the best decision for yourself if approached by law enforcement.

Let’s be clear: the right to free expression includes the freedom to read whatever we choose. The government doesn’t get to tell us what we can and cannot read.

NEW: Warning that retaliation against the press is a tactic that “belongs to a society much different and more oppressive than our own,” we filed a brief late last night in support of the Associated Press in their lawsuit against the Trump administration.

All young people deserve the right to read and learn an inclusive and complete history in schools, free from censorship or discrimination.

End of discussion.

Know Your Rights: You don't have to unlock your phone or give government officials your password without a warrant. For additional security turn off biometric identification such as Face ID.

It's Banned Books Week! Join us this year as we celebrate the freedom to read whatever we choose – free from government interference. Being able to learn about and engage with new ideas, especially those we may disagree with, is foundational to any healthy democracy.

The president has relied on a phony excuse to overstep his power and micromanage D.C., and Congress has followed suit. This isn’t the people’s will—not in D.C., nor around the country.

Tell your Senators & representatives: Hands off D.C: https://action.aclu.org/send-message/hands-off-dc-action

It’s always a good time to know your rights.

And remember: No matter what uniform they wear or authority they claim, federal agents and military troops are bound by the Constitution. /END

Knowledge is power. We keep each other safe.

With President Trump continuing to station National Guard troops in D.C. through November, one thing remains clear: the more people know their rights, the more they can protect themselves, their families, and their communities. 🧵

The government is engaging in unlawful racial profiling in the District. Agents are going after people simply based on how they look, targeting neighborhoods and jobs with significant Latine populations. This policy has created terror for D.C.’s immigrant community. 4/

Federal agents have been on fishing expeditions, stopping, arresting, and detaining people on their way to work or school or church, especially in heavily Latine communities. We want the court to stop these illegal arrests. 3/
aclu-dc.bsky.social
Immigration law requires agents to have a warrant to arrest someone. While there’s an exception when an agent has probable cause that a person is in the country in violation of the law and is a flight risk, federal agents are abusing that exception. 2/

Last week, we announced that we’re suing the Trump administration for its practice of illegal arrests of immigrants in the District. Since August, federal agents have been illegally arresting people in D.C. without a warrant. 1/ 🧵

Quote from Willy Chavarria, fashion designer, activist, ACLU Artist Ambassador for LGBTQ and Immigrants' Rights. Quote reads, "The farmworkers’ union and the farmworkers’ movement with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta were very important to us, because my family was working in the fields in California. I grew up knowing that those were my people, and I wanted to do what was right for my people."
