“If anyone *should* show…” would indeed make more sense but also impolitically suggests that NYC bears culpability for Trump, which seems rather unfair anyway.

Oh yeah, I really liked that. Actually I think all of my favorite King books are when he steps a bit outside his wheelhouse: 11/22/63, etc.
