Last week @adelphiu.bsky.social celebrated student research at the Scholarly and Creative Works Conference. Biology and Neuroscience students shared their exciting research with friends, family, and the rest of the Adelphi community.

Adelphi professor Dr. Natalia Prado and undergrad Mary Kearney investigated is kiwi get stressed by acting as zoo "ambassadors." They found that the birds are chill with hanging out with zoo-goers.

Huge congratulations to the team!

– Kelly Bartley (MS) showed the effect was specific to PKCι and not PKCζ.
– Prachi Shah (UG) demonstrated that VHL-dependent lysosomal degradation regulates integrins.
– Chandni Dave (4+1 BS/MS) found lysosome size and protein processing varied with VHL presence, reinforcing the mechanism.

Student contributions were essential

– Alyssa Schurr (UG) pioneered the PKCι knockout using CRISPR.
– Alexandria Jaramillo (MS) confirmed the effect in a second cell line.

Adelphi Prof. Alan Schoenfeld and 5 student co-authors published in Molecular Biology Reports, uncovering a key mechanism in kidney cancer. Their study shows that PKCι is essential for the VHL tumor suppressor to degrade α5 integrins in renal carcinoma cells.

Self promotion time! Recently, we found that maternal BMI status does not impact HMO composition, however maternal HMOs were correlated with specific infant bacterial taxa and genes, reinforcing the influence of HMOs on the infant gut microbiome. www.mdpi.com/3139886
