Comets are like 🐈: they have tails and they do what they want!
At this latitude, altitude, and without any major solar event, the dose due to cosmic rays is several orders of magnitude higher than the dose due to solar particles.
I really don't think they should have blamed the sun here

Also, a SEP induced event would likely have happened closer to the poles. You need a strong one to see some increase elsewhere.
In any case, it is a good scapegoat for a software that didn't correctly handle errors, and led to an accident.

There was really nothing unusual on October 30. When I first heard that story, I thought this would have happened on Nov 11, when radiation at aviation altitude actually increased. So it is either a cosmic ray, or their memory is slowly degrading over time because of SEP+ GCR

November 11-12 had actual increase of radiation at aviation altitude (I wish I had my instruments flying... we don't have good published measurements of a SEP at aviation altitude)

Oh, it looks like this was a flight on October 30. A quite boring day in terms of space weather (unlike November 11-12). There was not even a M flare, and minimum value for solar particles. Sounds like a good old cosmic ray or another problem they try to pass under the rug

There was no solar major solar storm for this flight indeed. A bit flip due to a cosmic ray is still high in the list of the possible causes. However, the redundancy and error correction software should have handled the issue...
I wouldn't be surprised if the Oct storm multiplied the chance by 10

Aircraft manufacturer know about this problem and test equipment in laboratory (especially at neutron facilities). It is really bad that this failure mod was not seen before that accident. Airbus previous had such a problem with Quantas Flight 72!

Fortunately, there are plenty of research groups working on the precise evaluation of radiation at aircraft altitude. Including while there are solar energetic particle events like the big one on October 11-12. (the shutdown didn't help though)

Heu, Happy Thanksgiving ?

I think there should be a modification of that index to take into account all the proposals written but not funded... because that's a lot of science hidden (hopefully not) forever

Une très bonne idée pour avoir plus de gens qui supportent les rond points aux US! (la moindre intersection sur l'equivalent d'une nationale est avec un feu et un nombre incroyable d'accidents a haute vitesse)
