There actually was a time when Alabama prisons weren't the drug & despair filled death traps that they are now. After speaking to people who have experienced this first hand & the decline in conditions in the last few years, it can be summed up in one word. Incentives. A thread. /1

56,000 people are serving sentences that will keep them locked up until they die. Most sentenced to Life without parole were under 21 yr old at the time. People age out of crime. People change. Keeping old men in prison isn't fiscally or morally responsible. #prisonreform #sentencingreform #Alabama

Alabama Department of Corrections has consistently defended the lack of family visits by saying "we put in video machines". Years of evidence shows family visits decrease recidivism but video visits don't. Can we PLEASE follow best practices that make our prisons & communities safer for once?

The money extracted from families of prisoners is extortion. Canteen sales at ADOC in 2025 $33 MILLION. The new provider will be the same as the new meal provider. Which gives them a big incentive to starve inmates for meals to boost canteen sales - as we've seen in other states. It's all predatory.

In Alabama prisons the men are strip searched after family visits. I always wonder what kind of negative association they will have long term after being humiliated every time they see their loved ones.

Alabama apparently thought banning porn is more important than so many people dying in prison here that the DOJ said it was cruel and unusual punishment - and they don't say that about the death penalty. So they're saying it's worse to be in prison here than to be killed by AL DOC.

Alabama’s state’s inmate population has risen from 17,864 in October 2021 to 21,121 in August. Current prisons were designed to hold 12,115 people. That’s almost DOUBLE, 3 men in 2 men cells, 2 men in single man cells. Overcrowding makes every single thing in prison worse for staff & incarcerated.

A 92yo man in an Alabama prison has been packing his bag each morning for YEARS thinking hes going home. He has dementia & inmates care for him. Today he died in prison without family because its a “security risk” to let a 92yo dying man w dementia see family. In Alabama cruelty is always the point.
