Note on Dion’s experience of Ajhure Had Dion been capable of language, he would have struggled to find the right word to describe Her. She was his dearest, most trusted friend. But friend wasn’t the right word. She was more than that to him. His beloved? But that sounded too romantic. He certainly wasn’t attracted to her in that way. Instead of feathers, she had bare skin. Instead of a beak, a nose and mouth. In every way she was the wrong size, shape, and texture to be an attractive hen. To him, her beauty was more like that of a sunset or waterfall. Perhaps he would have settled on “sister,” though he would have found that term lacking, as well. Fortunately for Dion, he didn’t have to worry about the limitations of language.

When she opened her eyes, warm sun kissed her skin, a sweet, floral scent filled her nostrils, and a cool breeze rustled the nearby bushes. Much better. She walked aimlessly along a cobbled path until she spotted a large boulder in the field to her right. She climbed to the top of the boulder and found a smooth, flat spot to rest. Removing her pack from her shoulder, she sat down cross-legged and pulled out a notebook and pencil. She needed to gather her thoughts, and she always found the best way to pin them down was by skewering them to parchment.
