Burning down the bad place

I’ve attended a naturalization ceremony and I had to fight to keep my composure—it was that moving and lovely. I was with the League of Women Voters, there to register our new citizens to vote. They were so thrilled and happy. This story breaks my heart.

the doomerism about the court presumes and concedes a premise about judicial supremacy that simply does not need to be conceded.

it's a co-equal branch. it's subject to checks and balances like any other.

the fact that our current congress is built on cowardice doesn't change the legal options.

the birthright clause was not just written to wipe dred scott off of the books, it was written to repudiate the *idea* behind dred scott, you might say the larger *ideological project* of dred scott. and the whole of section 1 of the 14th amendment is a constitutional statement of political equality

dred scott, in their minds, established the united states as a place of tiered citizenship and permanent inequality among americans. it was a ruling that said, in effect, that all men *were not* created equal and would *never* be treated as such.
