... and as for the second proposal - trying to "solve" human error with more educational programs - at this point in this thread I don't even know what to tell you. We've tried this for 70 years and it hasn't ever worked.

What the heck are we even doing here??!!!!

So what were their two ideas? Laughably unserious, that's what.

Automated enforcement is out of our control. And frankly: making this a priority at a time when similar technology is being turned into a fascist mass-surveillance network (www.404media.co/tag/flock/) is a non-starter...

How about "Build out a safe, comfortable network of bike routes for
people of all ages and abilities." This goal explicitly calls for us to add 5 miles of low-stress routes every single year. Have we added 25 miles of new all-ages-and-abilities bike routes in the last 5 years?! lol no

... and since we're not capable of doing Quick Build pilot/demonstration projects (or anything in any reasonable period of time), we're clearly also failing this goal to establish a protocol for responding to serious and fatal crashes.

@wsdot.wa.gov put out a fantastic guide to Quick Build projects - wsdot.wa.gov/sites/defaul... - with a taxonomy comprising 3 different categories.

The only category that A2 has even *arguably* achieved is "rapid implementation", and calling a 2-3 year timeline "rapid" is, well ...

"Establish a quick-build program". This is one of my favorite axes to grind (I refer again to www.damnarbor.com/2025/03/opin...). While A2 has done a handful of paint-and-post installations, we do not have a Quick Build PROGRAM...

- The 2021 reconfiguration on S. Main reduced excessive speeding (>10mph over the limit) by A FACTOR OF 7 (a2gov.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=... )
- The 2019 5th & Detroit Streetscape increased the rate of drivers stopping for pedestrians from 48% to 97% (www.a2dda.org/wp-content/u...)

Claim: "The difficult truth is that engineering can only influence people who are behaving within the bounds of normal expectations." youtu.be/PLdne7vIK9g?...

THIS IS NOT TRUE! In A2 we have clear examples of engineering achieving exactly this!

Elsewhere, Safety Engineering recognizes human errors are inevitable, and applies a "hierarchy of controls" to eliminate hazardous situations where feasible, and mitigate outcomes of any errors that can't be prevented (e.g. www.osha.gov/sites/defaul...)

But we don't do this with roads.

The @annarborobserver.bsky.social newsletter had a decent summary of the dynamic at the #a2council Transportation Commission meeting last week (mailchi.mp/aaobserver/a... ).

But we need to take some time to talk in detail about why the city's presentation was so damaging and damning... (🧵)

It might be a poultry sentiment but given that today is the most fowl day of the year, I hope y'all are making the best of it!

Well I'm sorta already on record being okay with locating noxious infrastructure in Barton Hills so

I was especially pleased to see that we were able to keep a little island between the travel lanes at Newport! The planned removal of crosswalk refuge islands had been, in my view, the only major downside of this project...

Or something like this...

(I did also bring this up with staff. They didn't say "no, never", but they expressed concern about the gutters getting clogged and requiring more frequent maintenance. Everything's a tradeoff.)

We have a problem in A2 where recent "raised" crosswalks are barely raised at all. Per city staff (youtu.be/6y9ItCbEQ6o?...) this is thanks to drainage and ADA grade limitations.

The explanations make logical sense to me, but still, somehow other cities manage to do this successfully...

Well, it would seem my #WeekWithoutDriving has escalated from errands around town to a long distance multimodal adventure. LFG!
October 3, 2025 at 8:38 PM
Happy #weekwithoutdriving! To be honest I was probably not gonna drive this week anyway but hey let's make it official.

I'm going bikepacking soon so today I took the touring bike out for a test/shakedown ride, then (cuz I was tired from the first ride) e-biked over to REI for some supplies...

Also the Decadome was an agenda topic at no fewer than 7 Center Of The City Task Force meetings...
August 9, 2025 at 5:19 PM
If by "sponsored" you mean it was funded with taxpayer money! And btw the Decadome guy was also *the treasurer of LGC* so this is basically cronyism / self-dealing.

Only $500 was actually spent, so honestly not that big a deal, though the initial proposal was for more than that...
