A 'blobber' with a clever combat system that forces you to make agonising decisions. It has a steep learning curve thanks to poorly explained mechanics (there are some aspects I still don't understand) but it's worth persisting with.

Based on the Wikipedia entry, which is probably non-comprehensive, these would be my retrospective top 3 from 1995:

Some surprises. My inner used to be pretty static, but it's all over the place now

I think it's because the restrictions are so tight that you can't possibly do everything, which counterintuitively frees you to just roam around and experiment

I've reached a point where I'm hitting dungeon crawl staples that I've heard of but never experienced myself, like spinners 😨

A metroidvania with an aesthetic and moment-to-moment gameplay lifted straight from Metal Slug. It even has those little touches, like an enemy eating at a table etc. Some of the bosses are annoying to fight but overall it's pretty good

How could I resist a metroidvania done in the style of Metal Slug?

It's a better game than it sounds like it would be, with some novel gameplay features going on.

Overshadowed by Doom, which it mimics a lot, and its own successor Hexen, but actually pretty good in its own right. Consumables add something to the basic template, and the environments are prettier than Doom's bases

A "blobber" (party dungeon crawl e.g. Grimrock) but unlike many in the genre it's pretty short at around 8 hours. A couple of annoying areas aside, it's pretty good. I find this genre hit and miss. This one is mostly hit.
