A photo I found on ebay of a "Franklin Elementary Spelling Ace." It's a yellow electronic device, about 4x6 inches, with a querty keyboard. Basically, it was a dictionary and it played hangman and word games.

Today I learned: the first verse of the REM song Swan Swan H(ummingbird) comes from a needlework sampler completed by Elizabeth Jane Hawkes in Salem, NC in 1865.
A square needlework sampler done in multi-colored threads on off-white linen. There is a verse of a hymn "Only waiting till the angels open wide the mystic gate/ at whose feet I long have lingered weary poor and desolate/ even now I hear their footsteps and their voices far away/If they call me I am waiting only waiting to obey" The relevant words are labels for many of the mirrored figures embroidered around the verse. "Swan" and "Hummingbird" with corresponding birds, "Hurrah We are all free now" under the image of a dancing man with dark skin. "What noisy cats are we" over the image of standing men. "He bore his cross" over images of the same men, but larger, "Girl and dog" under an image of a girl and a dog. The last line of the song's first verse, "A long low time ago people talk to me," then must be a reference to the historical artifacts that Stipe took these words from speaking to him in the present.
