I just arrived here from the other platform. To kick things off, here's a stack of books to get to known me 📚

Thanks for the heads up! I was not aware of this so I shall look it up!

I haven't read this one, nor do I own an English translation, so can't compare. But it's a dream of mine to one day be able to read Italian. I chose to learn Spanish now for rather practical reasons.

Oh I've had Loop on my shelves for ages (still unread)! I think this it the first time I see someone mention it! I'll have to look up the bottom two; top three are a given!

I know! One of the reasons why it's on my list!

Fun was had, books were bought📚

Compliments to my lovely partner & thanks to everyone who shared their opinion on my wishlist 🧡

I recently registered for a Spanish language course starting next month, after spending a month trying to decide between Spanish and Italian. Now I randomly found this Ginzburg in the original Italian and I half regret my decision…

My latest review for #WITMonth, SUNKEN CITY by Marta Barone (tr Julia MacGibbon).

I loved this thoroughly absorbing story of the personal & the political, which delves into the tangled history of Italy's Years of Lead. Margaret Drabble is a fan! #BookSky 💙📚

Sunken City by Marta Barone (tr. Julia MacGibbon)
In this fascinating, deeply moving book, the Italian writer Marta Barone takes the reader on a journey to reconstruct the father, Leonardo Barone (LB), she only partially knew before his death – an…

Thank you! Oh I'd love to be able to read Italian! But I think Lettieri did a great job translating it, there's a clear sense of Calandrone's style and the lyricism of her prose feels very natural and on point.

An ongoing thread of some excellent books by #womenintranslation - all read since last August. 🧵

A bookshelf containing some of the books in translation I've read over the past few years - many by women.

Oh my! Shortly after my move here I remember some downstairs neighbours dancing in the storm as their paved garden flooded. Fun times! But yes, I agree it doesn't storm enough!

I also found Edinburgh not to live up to its rainy and dreary reputation.

Oh yes! Or just random people reading in parks, trains, cafes. If there's something I'm nosy about it's people's reading tastes!

Some people don't care to keep everything they read, regardless of enjoyment level. Or maybe some of these were set text for a course and the person didn't actually care for them. I suppose we'll never know (well unless the unlikely happens: they see the post and solve the mystery for us)

It is possible. I'm a student but none of these books that I do own I bought for a course.

My thoughts didn't go on that grim a route. But it was only a bag of books, not a whole library - from my anecdotal experience most people who donate books to charity shops are alive and well and donating their own books.

(Although they got rid of those books which brings confusion and internal conflict)

At the charity shop where I volunteer, there are occasional, magic events where I open a bag of books donated by someone, and I don’t know who this person is, or what they look like, but I know she (I’m also sure she’s a she) is my kindred spirit.
