Universities are "not a temple or a church," Roberge said. Prohibiting the use of religious symbols in communications by public institutions. Expanding the requirement to have an uncovered face at all times to anyone present in a public education setting. Repealing the Freedom of Worship Act, which set out to preserve the "free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference."

Looking at the three pillars of the QAnon conspiracy theory, and they increasingly look like accusations in a mirror to me
Two years ago, in the summer of 2023, the American Values Survey attempted to measure the prevalence of QAnon by asking a representative sample of people whether they agreed with three tenets of the conspiracy theory: “(1) The government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S. are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation; (2) There is a storm coming soon that will sweep away the elites in power and restore the rightful leaders; (3) Because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country.” These questions did not sanitize this inherently violent conspiracy theory – they capture how out there, how deranged and extreme this stuff is. And yet, judged by their answers to these questions, 29% of Republicans qualified as QAnon believers, up from 23% two years earlier – with the survey defining “believers” as: “Respondents who completely or mostly agreed with these statements.”

INBOX: In a detailed LinkedIn post, investigative reporter @mackoxenden.bsky.social accuses Suncoast Searchlight, a nonprofit news outlet based in SW Florida, of firing her in retaliation for raising concerns about her executive editor's use of AI, leading to the insertion of hallucinated quotes.
This week, I was fired from Suncoast Searchlight. I was told it was for “performance issues,” including lack of story output, poor news judgement and inability to meet deadlines. In my 33 days at the organization, including in my weekly 1:1s, zero issues were ever discussed. It is not lost on me that I was fired one day after several staffers, myself included, raised concerns to our executive editor about her undisclosed AI usage during the editing and writing process, including inserting hallucinated quotes. We had several documented instances of troubling use. Concerned about the ethical implications and our credibility, we sent a letter to the board. The board doubled down in their support. I am extremely disappointed in our board — who did not ask to speak with any staffers nor examine the evidence we had to prove the questionable AI usage. Throughout my short few weeks at this job it was abundantly clear that the workplace has serious cracks beyond the AI usage. I moved 1,000 miles for this job. I was excited to work for another non-profit newsroom that focused on investigative journalism and claimed to have transparency. I was excited the board was filled mostly with experienced, highly regarded journalists. Every day as a journalist and everytime my byline appears, I vow to protect the truth and strive to have the highest level of ethics. And if it cost me my job to stand up for that truth then I would do it again.

But, in the adjacent and more middle-class Murray Hill (Queens), Cuomo outran Mamdani by double digits. In neighboring Bayside, home to the Korean middle-class, Cuomo won by twenty five percent. In Southern Brooklyn, the emerging Chinese communities of Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, and Gravesend contributed relatively few votes during the Democratic Primary (in June, Mamdani clobbered the listless Cuomo there, aided by younger, second generation immigrants). However, these middle-class neighborhoods have become the epicenter of rightward political realignment over the past five years. And last Tuesday, the behavior of these voters mirrored that of other Republicans: abandoning Curtis Sliwa en masse, and shifting dramatically towards Andrew Cuomo. Why? A series of damaging headlines (“Mamdani Says He Would Phase Out Gifted Program”) from both The New York Times and New York Post, articles which received tens of millions of impressions, surely did the Democratic nominee no favors. Nor did Cuomo’s repeated attempts to tie Mamdani to the legalizing (and proliferation) of prostitution, a damaging charge in middle-class immigrant enclaves. Nonetheless, the result goes well beyond just Mamdani, and should be contextualized in the multi-cycle realignment of Chinese voters away from the Democratic Party.

Axios reports that Reps. Shri Thanedar, Veronica Escobar, Sylvia Garcia, and Emily Randall, all part of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, are the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth sitting Democratic congresspeople to demand that Chuck Schumer cease being Senate Minority Leader.
"It is time for us to have somebody who can stand up to Trump and someone that is unwavering, somebody who is more strategic, and, frankly, somebody with guts," Thanedar said in a phone interview. Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) told Axios that Schumer "should not" remain as leader. Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas) said in a statement to Axios: "If I were a senator, I would be asking Senator Schumer to step down as minority leader. He's simply cannot meet this moment." Flashback: Only Reps. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) and Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) called for Schumer to step aside when he voted for a Republican spending bill in March. Ramirez doubled down on Monday, writing on X: "I've said it before, and I will say it again ... Schumer needs to resign." Zoom out: Other Democrats skirted just up to the line. "If I had a vote it would be for Patty Murray," Rep. Emily Randall (D-Wash.) told Axios, referring to her home state's senator.

Almost forgot: Rep. Seth Moulton, a member of the New Democrat Coalition who represents Boston's northern suburbs and is primarying Sen. Markey from the right, is the fourth (chronologically first) sitting Democratic congressperson to demand Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to step down.
Seth Moulton @sethmoulton Tonight is another example of why we need new leadership. If @ChuckSchumer were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote ‘No’ tonight and hold the line on healthcare. Maybe now @EdMarkey will finally join me in pledging not to vote for Schumer?
