Excited to share our new preprint!
Unlike the North American yellow warblers, females in Galápagos commonly sing and duet with their paired partners. Here, we tested possible functions with a playback experiment: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Illustration of female and male yellow warblers and their respective songs. On top, two duets are shown in spectrograms with male parts marked in red and female parts marked in yellow. On the left are three female songs and on the right are three different male songs. Illustrations are courtesy of Lena Gies.

This bower was located next to a nursery, something tells me the male bowerbird owner has been pinching from the kids 😆

#bowerbirds are the only birds that build structures used specifically for courtship. But why and how did this remarkable ability evolve?

We discuss some possibilities in our new review in Emu - Austral Ornithology!

New episode!! 🎉🎙️

A chat w/ @evoneuro.bsky.social & Georg Striedter about their new book, 'Bird Brains and Behavior.'

Birds do some astonishing things. They sing, fly, migrate, cache food, and hunt in total darkness. How do their brains make all this possible?

Victoria’s riflebirds are masters of time, accelerating their dance tempo by reducing the durations between movements by just 50 milliseconds, before leveling off at 3 alternations per second and flashing their yellow mouth.

Read more about this spectacular dance here:

Amazing riflebirds! We did not dare to write that males 'mesmerize' females with their spectacular displays, but .... judge yourself!

Textbook recommendation?

Dear #biology bsky: a philisopher friend of mine is looking for accessible textbooks on basic concepts in ecology, and is esp. interested in co-evolution and symbiosis. If you have brilliant materials to share/books to recommend, that would be great!
