“And who was this? Your warden?” The minotaur bellows as he wrenches his weapon out of the floor with a crackle of rocks before swinging it high up over his head. My lightning mana pierces me, but not as strong as before. I’ve been expending it rapidly since this mess started. But I have something else. I hastily and clumsily draw the demon into my lap, hugging them. I inhale… My opponent’s arm tenses as he roars, spittle flying from his mouth. “Worthless. They have failed you!” He swings down just as I exhale as hard as I can. Fire. It erupts from my mouth, first orange, then yellow, then white. My throat screams. The flames engulf the minotaur. It doesn’t stop the momentum of his swing, but luckily, we’re not there anymore, and the stone cracks where the morning star strikes and bites deep into the solid ground. It doesn’t even bounce up, that’s how dedicated the bull was to his swing. The force of the fire actually pushes me and the demon back across the ground. Just enough to dodge the morning star—but just barely. The weapon landed just past my feet. The minotaur even manages to take a small stumbling hoofstep closer, and for a split second I worry that he’s going to swing again, but he just curls and roars defiantly against my heated attack. Despite the great pain cooking my throat, I keep the flames going, squinting against the hot glare that makes my eyes water. Blindly, I fumble for the demon and try to adjust my grip on them so that I can stand and lift them at the same time. Even with my body magic enhancements this is hard. I really should incorporate more resistance training into my routine, ¡conio!

Rosa may not be allowed to express herself in obvious ways as a sorceress, but she gets by with teasing her wardens😏

What's a warden? A government babysitter. Iggy is there as much for the public as for Rosa.

“Ay, dios mío. I am a Nocten,” I mutter with a tiny grimace. “Told you.” Ignacio doesn’t even break his stride as he passes through the cafeteria’s automated exit. He does turn his head though as he adds over his shoulder, “I’ll get you black lipstick and some fishnets later.” There’s laughter in his voice. My eyes narrow with incomprehension. “Fishnets? Are we going fishing somewhere?” He stops and stares at me. Then he laughs, shakes his head, and keeps going. For a moment, it seems like he won’t explain, then he turns and says, “They’re like stockings, but they look like fishnets. El Gancho girls never thought about wearing ‘em? For real?” El Gancho. The nickname for Puerto Víbora. The borough my family moved to in the capital. I go so far as to wrinkle my nose a bit. “No. We’d stink like fish guts.” “I thought you liked fish!” “You don’t know anything about fish.” “El Gancho might reel ‘em up, but Quemaloco is still Castalena’s best place to eat fish.” We pass under the shadow of an old elm tree, foggy breath trailing behind us as we pick up pace. "No seras bobo," I scoff. "Just come over to Víbora already and eat a pescado frito." Ignacio sucks at his teeth with an affronted look. "Oh I see how it is. You think your borough's flashier? Just cuz you fishermen can’t handle real food—" "Real food with too much capsaicin—" "Real music that awakens your heart—" "Real noise that awakens your migraine—" "And real words used the way they're supposed to be," Ignacio snaps, looking annoyed in a way I thoroughly enjoy. He rips open his breakfast sandwich and growls, "They. Are. Called. Popotes!" He takes a massive bite and glares. The corners of my mouth nudge up. "Wrong. Straws. Are. 'Carrizos'." He throws his hands up. I actually have to lock my throat to keep from laughing.

We're all sitting in a cold room. Some are just handcuffed. Others, like me and Velia, have to sit behind containment runes. We've all been treated. They didn't wipe all the blood and dirt off though, so we still look like shit. There's cameras. I guess they're hoping we say something incriminating while we wait to be interrogated. I stare at one. Bruno extends a finger to it. I chuckle and smirk, and his tail wags a little. I sigh and lean my head on his shoulder. It's hard to stay mad at Beni, the big furry idiot. Ignacio keeps rubbing his chin. He stares through the floor. Brooding. I roll my eyes. I don't know what Rosa sees in him. Irene looks at him with concern. "Iggy? What are you thinking?" He glances at her. Rolls his shoulders and looks away. "Nothing." "You sure think hard about nothing," Elu notes wryly. I snicker. He glares at my friend. "Fuck you, snake." "Suck my tail, boot licker." She doesn't miss a beat. There's a reason she's my bestie. "He was thinking about growing a beard," Cora announces with a crooked smile. She eyes Ignacio. She's got silver handcuffs and her skin sizzles every time she shifts. Irene frowns and glances at Ignacio. "A beard? For wha--" Her eyes widen. "Oh, Iggy..." "Missing the forest for the trees," Velia sighs softly under her breath as she brushes lint away with a spider leg. Ignacio crosses his arms and glares through the floor now. "It was just an idea, all right? I thought that maybe... It'd be enough." He trails off. My lip curls when he looks at Cora. "You, uh. You think it'd work?" His voice is softer now. Poe snorts and lifts her head before her roommate can answer him. Her bat ears flick away a fly and she blinks sleepily around the circle. "Huh? Sorry, what're we talkin' about...?" "Whether or not Iggs looks like Rosa's pedo brother with a beard." "That isn't what I was--" Ignacio huffs. Then he narrows his eyes and looks at Cora. "Did you just call me 'Iggs'?" Poe quirks her mouth to one side. Then nods unsteadily. "Mmmm... It might be enough." Ignacio forgets his indignation and perks up. "Really?" "Unless you're planning on being able to braid the damn thing, a beard isn't going to cut it," Elu adds with an eye roll. Velia taps her chin. "Perhaps with a mustache?" Bruno snorts. "Can he even pull it off?" I hug Bruno's arm and caress his thigh. He's such a good boy. "Mustaches are out of style," Cora says with a shake of her head. Irene fidgets. "A-Are they?" Her eyes dart to Ignacio. "I don't mind them..." she says under her breath. I barely catch it. My heart kicks a little, and my eyes shift from Irene to Ignacio. Ishtar. Sometimes I wish stuff like this wasn't so obvious to me. It'd be obvious to any vellicubi with eyes, really. But maybe I could use this later in our growing little war over Rosa's affection. This is completely stupid, of course. I'm a succubus with a hunger handicap. I couldn't be monogamous even if I tried. But if Rosa looking at Irene's tits and being transported to some protozoic-Big/little fantasy doesn't threaten me, the way she looks at Iggy, this hot-headed jock... and the way he looks back... I could eat the guy. And I mean eat him. Whole. "I can make it work," Ignacio says with a look of resolve. "I'm growing a beard. With a mustache." I grimace and look down at Bruno's lap. I don't like Iggy, but... I can't fault him. If I looked like my crush's sexual abuser, I'd wanna grow a lame mustache too. "Does Rosa even like mustaches?" Irene asks awkwardly. Still. I can't help myself. "Rosa loves mustaches," I say innocently. Irene smiles uncertainly. She doesn't seem to know whether to support Ignacio's pursuit or remind him how unethical this is. "That's... er, good!" Ignacio lets out an exhale, like he just set down some great burden. "Yeah." I examine my claws at arms length. They need a trim. "They remind her of her dad," I add with a cruel smirk. Ignacio drops his head in his hands and Irene pats his back gingerly as the others just laugh. What can I say? I'm a demon, after all.

Finally moving from my hiding spot, I hastily holster my weapons and go back to my things. I grab the crystals, tapping all of them off save for one. The last one I dim to a lower setting with a downward stroke of my finger over its cool and uneven surface. I don’t want to be seen by anyone out there, but without a light source I’ll be in pitch black dark. The rest I store in my magic bag. I grab my trashy sex book and shove it in too. I see the bookmark has fallen out, and this annoys me, but I don’t pause or stop. There’s more at stake than whether or not the mouse gets off and stays in one piece while doing it. Once the book is put away, I turn to the candle. More gunshots. I’m breathing raggedly now. I feel like I can’t move fast enough. My hand trembles as I pick up the candle holder and draw the flame up close to my face. I inhale, making the flame gutter frantically. I don’t blow out. I keep inhaling. The flame bends toward me, elongating, until it starts to swirl and spiral, like water going down a drain, only it’s curving toward my mouth. My throat and chest heat up. When my lungs feel like they’re about to burst, the candle flame finally winks out. I exhale slowly. Only a little steam goes out, but I manage to keep the fire mana inside. I’m plunged into shadow, save for the one dimly glowing crystal in my other hand. I tuck this into my belt and return to the passed-out person. Now that I’ve brought a light source to them, I realize with more gusty surprise that my poor victim is actually a vice-eating demon. How do I know? Because of their dark silver horns jutting from the sides of their head. I palm my face. Can this get any more complicated? Conio! Electric fear buzzes in my limbs as I kneel down. I can still hear combat and struggle around me. Usually fights are brutal and fast, but this one is chaotic and massive. I think I hear more voices than before. I can freak out about who I’m saving later.

I blink at the poltergeist. “Hunting Night? What is that?” Hexsmith blinks at me. Then she smiles curlingly. “You. Don’t. Know?” She starts to giggle. I frown softly as I dodge an overturned chair next to a trashed sitting area. “No?” The succubus’ fingers dig into my flesh. Are they trying to tell me to be quiet? “Shut up, Hexsmith,” they say to the poltergeist. They have to raise their voice to be heard over the spirit’s growing laughter. “We’re leaving, all right?” “But she doesn’t know!” the poltergeist crows loudly, now kicking her slippered feet up into the air. “And you didn’t even know this girl was a sorc did you?” “I’d appreciate it if you’d stop calling me that,” I say loudly with narrowed eyes. Sorcerers can call themselves and other sorcerers “sorcs”. We kind of hate it when non-sorcs do it to us, though. It has an uglier meaning coming from others. “We’re leaving, Hexsmith! Go away, will you? I’ll make it worth your while, but just—” The succubus hisses, glancing at me with alarm. Hexsmith ignores our requests and just leans in with an awfully malicious grin. “Hey. Hey, perv. Did you know, that once a month at Howlsten Bane Academy, there’s an official event called Hunting Night where students get to hunt other stud—” The succubus yells, leaning over and swiping at the poltergeist. Their hand flares with a strange blue fire, but the outerborn dodges it easily with a twirl through the air. Hexsmith zips away, blowing a raspberry at us and cackling maniacally. I’d love to say that’s the end of it, but like I’d been trying to tell the demon before, it’s really important to have a good grip on passengers at this speed because— We crash.

Yaffah’s face, now restored to something closer to their typical complexion, grew pink across their cheeks and nose. “Someone’s down there,” they whispered tremulously. Their eyes widened as they licked their lips. “They…” The others leaned in. “Yes?” Velia murmured raspily. “They’re a feast,” Yaffah breathed with naked hunger. They could sense something that burned golden in their mind. It tasted like candy, sour and sweet. A coppery streak ran through it, bringing to mind blood. It made the succubus’ mouth salivate. It was so hard to resist. They were so hungry. “I… I don’t want to…” Their face tightened and they clutched at their head. “But I need it.” “Then we must have them,” Velia said with a sigh. “This minotaur will not be enough to get Yaf through the night. Bigger prey would ensure they make it to the morning.” “I hate you,” Yaffah whispered. More tears fell from their eyes, darkening the carpet like rain. Velia nodded, her face a river stone. “And you love me too. So long as you live, I will accept whatever you may feel.” “If there really is someone that juicy down there, then this minotaur definitely isn’t the last of the competition,” Elu groused, flicking the unconscious beastman’s foot with her snake tail. “Every horny jerk and mana hungry freak in the yard will be here!” Bruno’s nose flared. “I didn’t get a chance to investigate much, but now that you say that Elu—the scents I picked up when we first arrived were really fresh for how late it was.” “You could smell them? Can you count how many people there are?” Elu asked brightly. Bruno gave her a flat look. “With just my nose?”

“What was that stuff you splashed me with?” “Bear piss.” Bruno recoiled. “Elu— You— Shit!” He gagged, which was impressive on a wolf with jaws big enough to squeeze around her head. Any other time and she would have cackled at the sight. Now she spared only the quickest flash of a threadbare smile. Humor was slippery when Bruno held that which mattered most. “Be careful.” Elu eyed him with dark slitted green eyes. “Your strength is a sword, not a shield. But even a well-timed swing can spare a life. Understand?” The wolf stopped making faces and looked at her with huge eyes. Elu was prepping her next spell by crushing a sprig of ulkoeb and smearing the dark green paste on Yaffah’s forehead. “With your current strength, you could rip someone’s arm off by accident.” Elu looked at Bruno darkly. “Just make sure that arm’s not Yaffah’s, or I’ll poison you myself.” He gave her a hurt look. “I would never.” Elu rolled her eyes and smartly tapped the side of the wolf’s head. “I mean it, pup. You’d be shitting water for a week!” Bruno’s left ear twitched. What was that scuffle just now? “Sounds like when you cook dinner,” he said, distracted. He craned his head and tried to listen hard. “Fuck. You.” Elu whipped him on the thigh with her tail. “It’s not my fault Dion doesn’t know how to wash his hands.” Bruno’s ear twitched again. There! That loud thump! It sounded closer. He held up a paw as Elu carried on grumbling. “Shush.” She stilled, eyeing him with disquiet.
