Less than a week to go!

For a while yesterday, Luma was saying the event is sold out, but we have now corrected this - there is plenty of space, both online and in person!

In two weeks, we welcome Jang Jiyong (장지용, aka Alvis) of Estas to Edinburgh, to talk about Korea and the status of Autistic people in the country.

We will also talk a bit about AMASE and autism in Scotland.

At the Old College and online, 1pm BST/9pm KST on Saturday 11th October.

Paracetamol (Tylenol) does not cause autism, and it is a source of great dismay that autism researchers and Autistic advocates still have to spend so much time battling misinformation.

Research on causes of autism systematically fails to control for the existence and behaviour of Autistic parents.

As a Scottish organisation, it would be nice if we didn't have to worry about what the President and Health Secretary of the USA say, but unfortunately, autism misinformation affects all of us.

Here is our statement about pseudoscience and its impact on Autistic people.

When parents get info about their autistic kids from the autistic and disability communities, they will find people who think that their kids are awesome, and want their parents to feel the same way.

They will NOT find this love via #ProfoundAutism groups.

A "Profound Autism" Category Is Segregation—Not Progress

On the 24th, I had the opportunity to present the findings of a survey on autism assessment experiences—a vital research piece that brought together Scottish Autism, ARGH, AMASE, and SEMA.

Although the research was conducted in 2023, the situation has actually declined for Autistics in Scotland.
A collage showing highlights from the SPICe Committee morning briefing on “Experiences of Autism Assessment and Diagnosis in Scotland.” The top section features the Scottish Ethnic Minority Autistics (SEMA) logo and event title. Below, there are photos of Sofia Farzana from SEMA and Leo from AMASE smiling together, Sofia’s nameplate on the conference table, and slides displaying the joint research by SEMA, ARGH, AMASE, and Scottish Autism. The final image shows Sofia presenting at the podium alongside other speakers in a parliamentary setting.

30 September marks #InternationalTranslationDay, a celebration of the bridges language creates. At Scottish Ethnic Minority Autistics (SEMA), translation is more than words. It is about ensuring autistic people from all communities can access respect, dignity, and understanding.
Promotional graphic by Scottish Ethnic Minority Autistics (SEMA) for International Translation Day. The text reads: ‘INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY – Sharing autism stories worldwide.’ The SEMA logo is at the top. The centre features a poster titled ‘Autism Myth Busting’ with an illustration of a person surrounded by colourful flowing shapes. Around it are translated materials in multiple languages, including Urdu, Arabic, Gaelic, Polish, and Punjabi. The materials promote autism myth-busting, rights, support for autistic loved ones, and anti-racism. Logos for SEMA, BEMIS Scotland, and the Scottish Government are included.

Ari Ne'eman's Keynote at Stanford Neurodiversity Summit: Operationalizing Neurodiversity

What are some of the things we can do to make very concrete, measurable & specific changes in autism research and service provision, to better recover the true meaning of #neurodiversity?

Postscript: vaccines absolutely do not cause autism.

This has been investigated extremely thoroughly. There is simply no association between vaccination and autism. Being vaccinated definitely does not increase your chance of being Autistic.

This question has been settled.

A spokesperson for the World Health Organized dismissed Trump and RFK Jr.'s acetaminophen conspiracies:

"We know that vaccines do not cause autism. Vaccines, as I said, save countless lives. So this is something that science has proven, and these things should not be really questioned."
amase.org.uk
Again and again, studies that actually ask people what autism research should prioritise find that the funding landscape bears little relation to stakeholders' priorities.

The RFK Jr project is even worse: politically motivated, unscientific & anti-Autistic.

There is actually a good deal of agreement among different stakeholder groups on what autism research ought to be prioritising, but this has never really filtered through to the bodies making the decisions about what gets funded.

"We need clinical research to tackle the problem of harmful pseudoscientific treatments, mapping their use and effects on mental and physical health, as well as improving awareness among clinicians and carers."

The prevalence of bad and/or useless autism science goes on being a huge global problem.
amase.org.uk
Among other things they wrote "we urge focusing more resources on causes of mortality, improving our access to health care and mental health support, and large-scale monitoring of the effects of better access. This should include the impact on the detection and treatment of co-occurring conditions."
amase.org.uk
There are many important outstanding questions about autism that absolutely do need researching.

Very few of them have anything to do with the causes of autism.

'Autistic Perspectives on the Future of Clinical Autism Research' has nearly 40 co-authors:

By and large, as it turns out, Autistic people do not want to be prevented.

Less than 9% of this huge survey's Autistic respondents said they'd take a 'cure'.

Why would you prevent something people wouldn't want to be cured of?
autisticnotweird.com/autismsurvey...
Bar chart of results for Autistic responses to"If there were a cure for my autism, I would take it."
54.99% (4119) strongly disagreed.
26.95% (2019) disagreed.
9.05% (678) said neither.
5.47% (410) agreed, and 2.82% (211) strongly agreed.
amase.org.uk
Just as importantly, research on causes of autism takes resources and time away from research which has the potential to provide tangible benefits to Autistic people - as well as our families, those who work with us, and wider society.

Causes are mostly interesting if you want to prevent something.

Excited to finally be able to share these animations I’ve been working on with @fergus.oolong.co.uk , @iara-abigalil.bsky.social , @autisticrealms.bsky.social and other team members not on here. Particularly pleased to get my favourite image that I use of “thinking in constellations” in there ✨

The other animation is Lightbulb Moments: Being Autistic.

So much about Autistic experience is still missing from most professional accounts, which have been formulated from the outside.

Many people talk about all these little epiphanies: 'I thought it was just me!'
