196 (19 June). More racial profiling: a day laborer with valid asylum status arrested twice in one week by ICE!

Also, despite status, he was almost transferred to a detention center away from Los Angeles.

Ah, but you don't you know: this time is different! 😆

34. Russian 🇷🇺 researcher: visa revoked after research travel to France (apparently because failure to declare frog embryos in luggage).

She expressed fear of persecution in Russia because of anti-war views; for now, in detention rather than deported.

27. Probably the biggest story so far: Venezuelans 🇻🇪 detained & renditioned to El Salvador torture prison as "Alien Enemies" alleged to be members of the Tren de Aragua gang.

Apparently the only proof of gang membership required was that they had a tattoo.

Exactly! And the NYT reported last week (www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/w...) that the EU did have a "so-called Trump task force" to prepare for a trade dispute. Ridiculous that they appear not to have prepared seriously for other foreign policy changes!

The Atlantic suggesting that it is equally reasonable to see "gerrymandering and voter suppression" as threats to democracy as it is to see "the mainstream media" and "immigration" as such threats, as though the difference is only one of partisanship

Even taking the ridiculous stab-in-the dark guesses and arbitrary scaling choices (Congo gets *1.5 but WWI *1) at face value, this is what it looks like if you bundle it in equal 4-century periods, with the most recent one being the post-enlightenment one Pinker thinks makes the real difference.

Right, and it is telling which topics they were much less interested in keeping in public view. For instance, a simple search for articles published in the past year in the NYT shows:
- Claudine Gay plagiarism: 37 articles
- Clarence Thomas corruption: 22 articles
