I don’t know until quite recently the amazing Waterstones on Gower Street is by the same architect. I think it’s one of the best bookshops in London!

If you've ever wondered why... it is called the Hippodrome?
The word comes from the Greek ‘hippos’ (horse) and ‘dromos’ (racecourse). When it opened, the name suggested scale, spectacle, and excitement – a perfect fit for a circus of variety.

I've been loving taking people around the Hippodrome on my walking tour 🎭. Most are amazed at its history. When it opened in 1900 the arena could transform in a minute and host incredible water spectacles. If you'd like to learn more, join the walk, That's Entertainment!
Vintage postcard of London's Hippodrome, 1900. Showing drawings of the ornate decoration and its exterior, vestibule, royal box, cabin saloon, and the main reason for this post - it's water tank feature that could hold 100,000 gallons of water, and saw breathtaking water spectacles as part of the show.

Wow! What a great photo - this would have been about a year after he was in the pantomime, Cinderella at the Hippodrome.

Before Hollywood… before fame…a young Charlie Chaplin appeared on stage at the Hippodrome!

From Leicester Square to the Hippodrome, our walk traces the footsteps of legends — long before the lights of Hollywood found them.
A life-sized bronze statue of Charlie Chaplin stands here, dressed as his famous ‘Tramp’ character — bowler hat tilted forward, cane in hand, and a slight, whimsical smile. His baggy trousers and oversized shoes capture the charm and comedy that made him an icon. Set against the bustle of Leicester Square, the statue feels like he’s pausing mid-scene, ready to wander into another silent film adventure.
