Text: Rara Avis Zine Contributor Preview: Illario is known to be a bit of a romantic, so he can be excused for the cliché of feeling like her touch through his clothing burns like a brand. “Teia,” he begs—whether for mercy, for succour, or for her to just stab him through the heart and end this charade, he doesn’t know. When he comes begging to Zara, it’s not like this. When he plays with targets and dalliances, it’s not like this. His body feels safe around Teia, and that’s *not something he can afford.* “Illario,” says Teia, gently, as he looks down into her eyes, so much closer than they should be, “I really don’t think you should be alone right now.” [End Text.] The image uses gold and purple colours to match the Antivan Crow theme, and includes the Crow logo/mark, which is a mask with a beak and feathers extending upward.

The Chariot is a challenging card representing determination and willpower. Reversed, it may mean lack of direction/ self-control. (It's time to take the reins of your life.)

Mags de Riva walks a careful balance between coercion through the power they hold as a Crow and the responsibility to act.
The Chariot tarot card depicts a figure sitting inside a vehicle that is being driven by two black and white sphinxes. The whole card has a bit of a celestial influence; the figure sits underneath a blue canopy adorned by white stars. On his shoulders, he carries the sign of the crescent moon, representing the spiritual influence under which he is guided. On his head sits a crown, meaning that he is enlightened, and that his will is pure. Emblazoned on his chest is a square, denoting the element of earth, of the material world, which grounds him and his actions. The sphinxes are colored in black and white, a symbol of opposing forces that the charioteer must learn to control. Here they are calm, but they frequently get into scuffles as they seem to want to move in different directions. His task is to guide these sphinxes towards a destination, one that is marked by the cosmic forces that he represents. The Chariot is linked to the Cancer zodiac sign. One of the central conceits of some of my Dragon Age writing is based on how I see spirits and the people they're possessing as affecting each other in canon. #DATV
A screenshot of text from my Tumblr, ofcrowsanddragons: My Dragon Age thesis is that characters who are possessed by spirits become more like a spirit (which is why they can't be possessed when no longer possessed) and that spirits who possess an embodied being become more like that being in turn. A possession where the two beings are in sync allows them to shape each other naturally over time. However, most "abominations" that form (that we know about) involve the spirit wildly attempting to shape the other being without being in sync at all. Magpie Rook: forward momentum! An assassin involved in Viago's takeover of House de Riva, they met Lucanis on a gothic horror adventure into Minrathous. As a pair: desperate not to hurt each other; incredibly intertwined.

Also: Genderfluid. Unreliable narrator/possessed. Great mentor to fledglings.

His hips caged mine, stepping in as if for the next step of a dance. His off hand was a hot brand against the arm he was practically using to choke me, but he seemed to have forgotten about his own blade. His nose was close to my body as he traced a line from my collarbone and to my throat. As he breathed in, his lips brushed against the ruffled collar of my shirt, and I very badly wanted to know what would happen next. “Layers of conviction carved from cold mountain rock,” Lucanis said on a sigh, “and flowers in bloom on an icy breeze. Terror and persistence. A poison and a cure. The hunter and the protector all at once.” “Oh, you do have something of the Fade in you.” I said, as I brought the knife in my off hand to press between his ribs, threatening his heart. He inhaled, a quick, surprised sound as he pulled back to meet my eyes. “Be careful,” I advised him, “If you know me so well, I might find that I need to keep you.” The threat of the knife didn’t seem to sway him, his gaze going even more intent than before. Here was the master assassin, having so little left to fear when it came to physical violence against his own person. He let go of my arm, stepped back slowly enough that I could follow him with my knife even as I let my sword dissipate into the ether. He looked at me like he’d never seen me before, his warm brown eyes staring intently into my own behind the mask as he took another step back. “Would you?” he asked. “Keep me?” “Lucanis,” I breathed, not letting the knife waver as I stepped with him, “if you truly wanted to be mine, I’d never let you go.”
