Evidence for #recombination, and maybe #meiosis, in free-living #Rhizaria! I wish the results were clearer. As so often we raised more questions than we could answer :) If you are into #sex and the #meiosis-toolkit, this is an important read! #ProtistsOnSky link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Eleutheroschizon duboscqi is a marine protococcidian that parasites the polychaete Scoloplos arminger🪱 . It grows epicellularly, enclosed in a two-membrane parasitophorous sac derived from the host cell, that ends in a protein-rich tail #Midweekmicrobe

Why do some planktonic protists develop a gelatinous matrix? We suggest that this original adaptation is a strategy to cope with ocean oligotrophy: doi.org/10.1111/1462...
Led by @n-llopis-m.bsky.social, and thanks to all co-authors, I'm very happy to finally see it out!

This is the first time I’ve seen a starfish larva in samples from Cromer Pier, so I’m super excited. This is probably Asterias rubens and this is a bipinnaria stage larva. I’ve photostacked the images, it’s not perfect, but it allows us to see all the bits of this very 3D larva. #plankton 🦑

First study from the lab is out! We describe ApuRs, a new family of microbial rhodopsins unique from apusomonads. ApuRs represent the first anion-conducting rhodopsin channels that can be controlled by UV light, offering potential as new optogenetic tools. #protistsonsky

When the day is grey and rainy, the best kind of inspiration comes from old taxonomic books filled with beautiful illustrations. Here’s a plate of slime molds by Ernst Haeckel published in 1904 – a timeless blend of art and science. 🧪📖🔬

Sexual reproduction is a poorly studied phenomenon in protists. There are several primitive forms of sexual reproduction, making it difficult to determine when they reproduce sexually and when asexually. Testate amoebae are a good example of such a case.

@zlatogursky.bsky.social, a leading researcher of heliozoans, shared a gem in a recent exclusive interview: these underrated protists have a rare trait that could open doors in broader biological research. Don’t sleep on the heliozoa.

It was a very productive week in lab!
We now have Naegleria fowleri (brain-eating amoeba) cultures growing, in addition to the Naegleria gruberi (harmless relative) cultures we have been using as a model. Put side-by-side, it is impossible to tell them apart.

🧪 Here’s a quick breakdown of the general structure of testate amoebae — from their shell to the pseudopodia they use to move and feed. You can read the full article on these protists in the first issue of Amoeba Discovery magazine: stefanluketa.com/amoeba-disco...
