Things certainly slip over time. Student expectations change, retention campaigns from our army of administrators, and most of all the genuine impulse to deal with the students (and their preparation & resources) you have, despite shortcomings. They pay a lot to be there. 🤷🏻

The whole country is suffering a collective collapse of meaning and purpose maybe. One thing the internet has done well is show how the whole point of the United States today is to facilitate wealth accumulation for about 200 people. We stand for nothing else.

I have a 4000-level “Worldbuilding” class next term. A lot of my best fiction writers are enrolled. The reading load is enormous, and I’ve told my writers. For the others, I’m sending an Dante-esque warning that it’s going to be like 1999 up in here. All I can think to do.

It is a gun to the head of a university though. If you lose a billion dollars in grant money, you have to close departments, entire colleges, lose all those students, faculty, and researchers permanently. Whole swaths of your university disappear.

Yes. I understand there's many things it can do, often poorly, like that graphic from Nature Magazine today, but unlike prior software tools it doesn't seem to unlock creativity and imagination so much as displace it.

I want to see it fall to 90/10 and then Trump announce he’s never leaving office and the constitution is kaput, replaced by a governmental structure outlined in his past tweets and edited by Laura Loomer.
