Living in Ottawa on unceded Anishinabe territory. Photos and opinions my own unless otherwise specified. Don’t expect much, though, since I’m mostly just lurking here while procrastinating. She/her.

Copycat! She often does this, it’s adorable but still makes him nervous.

Found these ones quickly enough, I remember having more so they’re probably in a different storage container…

Then found another predator-prey pair a bit later, a twofer of twofers! This time it was an aphideater living up to its name with an (ex)oleander aphid. #invertebrates

Had a surprise #TwoferTuesday observation for @inaturalist.bsky.social today: this bumblebee was staying unusually still I thought, then I noticed the ambush bug clinging to it!

Preorders are love for authors, but they can also be a delightful surprise for readers who forget which books they purchased months ago, and suddenly received in the mail!

Our late summer asters and goldenrods are just getting started, but we’ve been getting heat waves and almost no rain for weeks so even well-established plants are struggling this year! I’ve been having to water my garden way more than usual.

The face of a dog who doesn’t understand why he deserves this kind of treatment…all he did was try to chase a black and white striped kitty out of the yard? Is it really his fault if the kitty made a big stink about that?

I have been delighted to have the opportunity to watch a family of merlins growing up near my house this year. Here are two of the (I think) four fledglings mugging for the camera while waiting for Mom to deliver snacks. Look at these adorable little muppets! 🪶

Just finished reading this in one sitting, because I couldn’t put it down…dang it, @tkingfisher.com, I have to work in the morning!

Some fireflies found resting in our milkweed plants this summer. Three different species in our yard! #WorldFireflyDay

Nature’s delight? Oh no, who’s going to tell them…this could have been so nice if they had used a native bee instead, and skipped the hexagon shape!

We delayed our evening walk until dusk to avoid the worst of the heat wave, and were rewarded with some summer magic: dozens of fireflies twinkling around us, throughout the neighbourhood. Including some in our own yard! I found this one resting on our milkweed yesterday.

Congratulations to this mimic fly, who had me completely convinced that it was a bumblebee until I took a closer look at this photo. Well done, little cosplayer! 🐝 🪰

Happy #Caturday everyone! Celebrating a rare occasion of comfortable proximity between our matching pets. Normally Blue (🐶) is too nervous to let Cinder snuggle up to him.

Took the afternoon off work so that I could go plant shopping at the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville. Now I just have to figure out where to put all my new babies. 🌱🌿🌸

I didn’t expect to observe this backyard neighbour for the #CityNatureChallenge but I’ll take it! Good thing the dog didn’t notice and everyone was able to go about their business…
April 26, 2025 at 1:35 AM
Getting started on my #CityNatureChallenge with a couple of sightings from the morning walk. Just cell phone shots for now. Can’t forget it’s #Invertefest too, so here’s a teensy isopod!

A gorgeous wood duck drake in full breeding plumage would normally be a highlight for me (and he is!) but he had stiff competition along the Rideau today, with the migrating buffleheads, bald eagle and my first ever northern shoveler! 🪶🦆🦅

Happy Easter, from a Rabbit of Unusual Size!
April 20, 2025 at 9:10 PM
Saw my first mining bee of the season today, so I decided to go ahead and open up the bee houses for their non-digging neighbours. Looking forward to seeing who moves in this year!

Delighted to find the first crocuses blooming in my front yard today. Tulips and daffodils are sprouting too. No wildflowers yet, but they won’t be far behind!
April 6, 2025 at 7:05 PM
Spending this #Caturday snug and warm inside, just like every other day for Cinder and Ebony!

Great shot! I’m no expert, but the wing pattern looks similar to a prince baskettail?
