This is a nice story. I hadn't realised they were doing work on these paintings.

I'm amused by the comment that "the North Wing was built in 1732 to help run the hospital and raise money for it, but fell into decline as the hospital prioritised clinical areas" like they prioritised the wrong thing!

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

I don't think anyone who's salivating at the prospect of mass political violence or civil war has the foggiest idea of how bad these things are in real life. It's beyond their memory and their imagination.

Shabana Mahmood is the new Home Secretary (with Yvette Cooper becoming Foreign Secretary).

As I wrote last month, she won plaudits for managing fiendish Justice brief + long admired inside No 10 for political antennae. www.newstatesman.com/politics/lab...

By turning the prisons crisis into an opportunity, the Justice Secretary has drawn praise from across the spectrum.

Apparently, 19th-century Archbishops of Canterbury sought the Monarch's permission to leave the UK. Here, Archbishop Tait requested Queen Victoria's approval for a trip to Switzerland. I have no idea how long this custom lasted. 1/2

My own observation of this new place is:

1. People are following any old familiar face, even if they didn't on the old place (I am guilty).

2. A great deal of the commentary is on generalist things - dogs, food, and weather phase - and not yet settled on incredibly niche interest spheres.

OTD 1558, the accession of Elizabeth.

At early Communion, in quiet recognition of the wisdom of the Elizabethan Settlement, we had one of the great gifts of her BCP 1559: the bringing together of the 1549 and 1552 words of administration.
