A charcoal-grey salamander wearing quarter-plate armour over chainmail and leathers duels with an attacking castle guard after being discovered by the night watch. Torchlight illuminates him as he parries with his sword and holds his dagger in the offhand; his weapons appear to be made of meteoric glass.

Probably my favourite HoMM entry. VI and VII provided an interesting expansion on the art direction, if anything. But HoMM V is really where it started; the art for V was, in my mind, a golden age.
