anyway please read my extremely queer Portland magical girl novel. it's chock full o' lesbians, both trans and cis (plus a really cool bisexual), and a lot of very gay emotions about women loving women

and there's a sequel coming your way very soon with even *more* gay shit in it
magicariot.com
New trans girl Claire just found out the members of her fav Portland band are magical girls - and she's one, too! Now she’s out of the closet as the newest member of Magica Riot!

Check out the book Strange Horizons called "brilliant trans joy," in print, ebook, and audio. magicariot.com/magicariot
Artwork of the cover art of "Magica Riot," featuring protagonist Claire in her purple magical girl costuming posing in front of the St. Johns Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Across the top, artwork of her and the other four main characters in a park is placed. Around the book art are placed several blocks of text: "trans protagonist," "entirely queer cast," "found family energy," "thrilling action," "music-based magic," "goopy monsters," "useless lesbians," "modern-day Portland." A quote from Strange Horizons Magazine calling the book "Brilliant trans joy" comes next. Finally, text at the bottom reads: "Recommended if you like Sailor Moon, Symphogear, Pretty Cure, Power Rangers"

Release day is over but it's still a good time to buy #ChoicesAnthology for stories that confront the terror people of marginalized genders feel every day as our reproductive rights are threatened or taken away, ranging from extreme body horror to tragedy to pure catharsis

Red paint background with the cover for Choices: An Anthology of Reproductive Horror on the left. The cover lists the editor, Dianna Gunn, the author of the foreward, Alex Woodroe, and the names of the authors: R Haven, Ondine Mayor, Enoli Lee, Ash Vale, Justine White, Kelli Etheridge, Ava Victoria Black, Allay Rei, Soyam Siddha, Sam Rosewilde, A.H. Davison, Meg Calendaria, KT Wagner, Anne Wilkins, Bogi Takacs, Amanda Cecelia Lang, Elise Scott, Mia Dalia, Raluca Balasa.

The right side says: “As the horrors close in around us, we turn to story to process our fears, our desires, and our futures. In Choices: An Anthology of Reproductive Horror, nineteen writers whose reproductive rights are under threat explore the stories of those who, like them, have had their choices stolen from them.
These stories serve as a reminder of the power of choice and the importance of fighting for every human’s right to choose their own future.”

anything about this anthology that makes you anxious? ie: the potential for right-wing hate or even censorship?
andrew-j-minyard.bsky.social
hardest part of editing an anthology? other than, i assume, turning stories down.

With 3 days left until #ChoicesAnthology releases, I wanted to share the wonderful things folks are saying about it!

First up, a quote from the foreward by @alexwoodroe.com, which made me tear up with pride when I read it

Preorder now to see what she's talking about! books2read.com/u/3JYo9Q

The right side says: “Putting together an anthology is a work of both science and art; a complex puzzle of moving parts that have to come together just so. It's a gargantuan effort, and that means the engine needs a lot of fuel. Sometimes, they're fueled by big press money or big names, but my favourite ones? The absolute best of them, they're fueled by individual rage and the desire to make the world a slightly better place; to weave together a meaningful moment from the stories of artists with something to say.
And you can't do any better for that than Choices. Not only is it masterfully put together, but each of these individual authors mean business, you can read drive and purpose and heart in every piece. Every one is a winner at a gruesome competition nobody ever volunteered to take part in.” ~ Alex Woodroe, Author of Whisperwood and Editor in Chief of Tenebrous Press

i also recommend looking into MMIW2S (murdered and missing indigenous women and two-spirit)

This is not just history, but indigenous peoples reality.

the history: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

the present: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
andrew-j-minyard.bsky.social
Nearly 75% of aboriginal people presented to “The Board of Eugenics” were sterilized, as compared to 60% of other races presented to the board.

And there are still reports of sterilization of indigenous women happening TODAY in canada
andrew-j-minyard.bsky.social
If you went in to have a child at the clinic/hospital, if you had surgery, if you were institutionalized, then you were sterilized, sometimes without your knowledge. And that’s not even mentioning that your doctor could coerce you or even forcibly hold you down.
andrew-j-minyard.bsky.social
When we think of the genocide of indigenous people; we think of the mass hunting of the buffalo, the call for “indian scalps”, small pox blankets, residential schools, and more

But we should also talk about that roughly 25-50% of indigenous women were sterilized from 1960-1970s

The right side says: “I don't understand Doctor… I haven’t been on birth control in years because we’ve been trying for a baby. Why… How in the world would I have had an… Essor? That doesn’t make sense.”
Her mouth felt numb as she spoke. They had been trying for a baby for so long. Her husband had been tested for fertility issues and found none, and none of her previous doctors had mentioned any potential problems on her end so they had just kept trying. But now she was sitting in a fertility clinic listening to the doctor tell her that somehow, at some point, she had been sterilized.
