"Eight of the goals occurred in the last nine matches. For five of the six full seasons between 2017/18 and 2022/23, Liverpool conceded eight times or fewer from set pieces"

As the Reds are being punished from set plays, we'd better dig into the data:

This little man is my best pal Marley.
He died on Saturday.

Hang this in the Louvre (if Liverpool finish eighth instead of ninth).

Cody Gakpo was frustrating at times against West Ham but was involved in both goals. Isn't it time we focused on his positives a bit more than the negatives?

He's the subject of my latest newsletter: www.andrewbeasleyfootball.com/p/the-fire-a...

Liverpool had five shots on target without conceding any today. It was only the 12th Premier League game in which they have done this in the last 11 years.

That's more like it, Reds. Here's my review of the match:

Very good half from Joe Gomez.
We'd have probably thought he was a pretty good right-back if he hadn't been deputising for a generational talent.

I never saw Bowie. Wish I did. So to see 2/3rds of his Berlin band play some of my favourite ever songs was a thrill tonight. Emotional too ❤️

"Arne Slot must feel like Homer Simpson... The stone of triumph has been replaced with the stone of shame within six months. The weight of it might sink him."

Liverpool should & will stick with Slot, at least for now. My latest newsletter explains why: www.andrewbeasleyfootball.com/p/liverpool-...

The physical data for the Champions League shows LFC's full-backs have all covered broadly similar distance.
Sprints are a different story.

Looks like several Dr Whos at once…

Gorgeous package, definitely ordering that.

I can't recall a match in which the five best chances were all converted.

I doubt there's another example of a team having six headers from inside the six-yard box without putting any of them on target either. There's only so much Slot can control...

Champions League state of play after week five.

Eighth place has 10 points, 24th has six - identical to this point last season.

There aren't many teams anywhere who've conceded 2+ goals more times than Liverpool this season (12).

I said in my Forest match review that Ekitike has to start over Isak.

It would be brutal to sack Slot. He’s managing a group of grieving men. Any wonder they make mistakes? Getting rid of Arne would maybe bring the players down further too. There’s no magic wand for this.

But it’s also hard to know where Liverpool go from here. Loooong season ahead.

Up the Reds.

It had been a decent enough first 30 minutes... but when it goes wrong this season, it goes real wrong.
November 22, 2025 at 3:55 PM
Thanks. Looks like it’ll be the description in this pic for pressure regains. When talking about Opta’s final third regains or high turnovers, it should be a ball recovery in the relevant part of the pitch - starting a new possession sequence in other words (I think).

The eye test says Liverpool's press isn't working, the data says it is... either way, it's helping their attack.

Only two of these players are in their 30s. Just one is 33.

Seven of the other nine are at least five years younger than Mohamed Salah. Life in the old dog yet.

Have all the best Scotland goals since Archie Gemmill happened tonight?
November 18, 2025 at 10:00 PM
I went to a screening of a Manic Street Preachers documentary tonight. James Dean Bradfield (centre) did a Q&A afterwards.

The film is about the aftermath of the disappearance of Richey Edwards and the making of the subsequent album, Everything Must Go. It’s great.

Liverpool's defence has come under a lot of criticism this season, most of it fair.

Yet based on the corresponding fixtures the defence has been broadly the same, with the attack far more of an issue. We'd better have a look into that: www.andrewbeasleyfootball.com/p/its-the-at...
