This is the thing about archaeology: The settlement covers several square kilometers, and finding the bodies at all was a lucky break. The skulls could be anywhere. Maybe there's a pyramid of skulls 2 meters to the left of the excavation! Or maybe they were stuck on spikes, or buried in the woods.
