It’s ironic, but working with REMF on his tempo stuff was almost the opposite. He was so focused on playing around everything and never going “shields down.” But he could also do crazy racing math in his head and won so many games with exact lethal. So I wonder if that’s the step 2 to your step 1

The upside: the invites don’t stack, so once someone wins, there isn’t much incentive to grind more

I think the biggest issue is the experienced players who sort of set up the linguistic pitfall for a new player to fall into.
It’s rare, thankfully, but you can tell when someone is way too excited to let a judge know their opponent asked if they can flip a coin or something.

One of my favorite experiences was a judge when I was starting out saying something like “I am going to mediate this. Do not say anything to the other person until I say it’s alright”

The big difference for me with this card and other 4 drops like Gideon is “wrath your board, and for the next turn or two, if you had some sort of answer to stabilize, actually you don’t” :) :) :)

If there’s any sort of racing happening, this card kind of insta wins you the game. Opponent should never live to see their stuff come back in, treat it like a white summoners pact you never have any intention of paying for in a few turns

Bad choice of frame, probably some censorship involved, but I think the idea is supposed to be that the fire nation slaughtering all the airbenders is the blasphemous act. This is the moment Aang realizes that.

Congrats Mark! I think that a wonderful part of your legacy is that game design is a more open conversation these days. I remember giving you a Platinum Angel to sign and you said “I didn’t design that one!” Which made me realize, whoa this guy remembers every card he HAS designed, and cares.

My usual prompt of “show me what you got” after they hem and haw stolen shamelessly from Yoman literally didn’t work after 5+ times. I think when I play sealed on Sunday I’m going to lead with “this format has a lot of draws. Unless we both play quickly there’s zero chance we top 8”

I had a draw a few RCQs ago for a similar reason, super frustrating. I think in the future I would have called a judge after the first 5 minutes where they seemed confused, spoke to the judge away from the table, and said “my opponent is new to the game and playing slowly. I’d like you to help”
