A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

Found when sorting an old drive. I still, very occasionally, say 'not many badgers in the House of Lords' and this is why:
Letter to the Guardian. The protection of badgers has a long pedigree (Report, 29 August). Arthur Gore, known as "Boofy", the eighth Earl of Arran, was a fanatical defender of them. He was also a tireless campaigner for the rights of homosexuals. In 1967 he managed to push through a law in the Lords that decriminalised homosexuality but failed to pass a bill to outlaw the cruel hunting of badgers. a bichon frise is sitting (or standing? laying down? hard to say, for reasons that will become apparent) on a light carpet and staring directly at the camera. her fur is teased out to form a perfect sphere, and her legs are nowhere in sight, so she just looks like a white orb with a little black nose and judgmental brown eyes. a very round blob of dog is looking up at you from a light carpet with wide, intrigued eyes. there’s just the faintest smudge of discoloration around her mouth, but you better not make her self-conscious about it. the round bichon is resting at the edge of an orange leathery sofa, but this time, her two front paws are hooked over the front edge of the seat, so we can confirm she actually has legs. jury was out until now.
