It’s a good day for exploring some wacky BSE zoning textures in feldspar.
A grayscale back scattered electron (BSE) image of a feldspar with a dark, patchy, resorbed core, from which a bright oscillatory zoned region has grown. Multiple intergrown oscillatory zoned sanidine crystals emanating from a shared dark, resorbed plagioclase core.

New paper out! 🌋 We used rhyolite-MELTS in some unconventional ways on the spectacular Cordón Caulle system and learned that it is feasible that these rhyolites fractionated directly from a basaltic mush. Was such a fun project with great people.
