... but the primary point is that it would be unique, like a badge number. Or maybe, you know, your last name like normal law enforcement and military people wear.

Pretty sweet, right? Now sure, a “unique recognizable alphanumeric identifier sequence” could mean something like “NCC-1701” instead of a name (actually that’d be a pretty sweet identifier, *I’d* wear that!)...

... must have visible identification (for which a unique recognizable alphanumeric identifier sequence will suffice) affixed to their uniforms or helmets and prominently displayed, including when wearing riot gear.”

The TRO that was just issued in the Chicago Headline Club case actually addresses a *lot* more, but let’s start with this (Notes from the Front members, the TRO along with the opinion is in your inbox):

You see, while all of the attention was on the Illinois v. Trump case, a bunch of journalists, protestors, and others who are ‘similarly situated’ in Illinois quietly filed a lawsuit alleging violation of their 1st Amendment rights by Noem, Bondi, and a bunch of other administration folks.

So sayeth Illinois U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis, in the *other* Illinois against the administration case that was heard today, Chicago Headline Club et al v. Noem.

... or at least you do need to wear something identifying who you are, and I don’t mean just “I’m with ICE and I’m here to (not) help,” but actually identifying who *you*, uniquely, as an individual are.

YES!!! MEANWHILE IN ANOTHER COURTROOM IN ILLINOIS, ICE ORDERED TO WEAR IDENTIFICATION, AND MORE!

Hey ICE, with apologies to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, it turns out that you *do* need stinkin’ badges,...

It will include all of the testimony from both sides, as well as what the Court ordered. I've been told that it should be ready by midnight. If I can stay awake that long I'll try to have it out to you tonight. Otherwise I'll get it out to you tomorrow morning.

So stay tuned...it's gonna be good!

I JUST PREORDERED THE TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S ILLINOIS v. TRUMP HEARING FOR US

I've just pre-ordered the transcript of today's hearing in Illinois about the deployment of the National Guard.
annepmitchell.bsky.social
"The judge also said there is overwhelming evidence that deploying troops would lead to civil unrest, and said the provocative nature of ICE agents' actions, and in some cases constitutional violations, has led to an increase in protest activity already."
annepmitchell.bsky.social
...casting "significant doubt" on Homeland Security's credibility and assessment of what's happening on the streets in the Chicago area.
annepmitchell.bsky.social
...calling the Trump administration's claims otherwise "unreliable."

She also noted that federal grand juries have refused to indict a number of protesters who were arrested outside the Broadview ICE facility,...
annepmitchell.bsky.social
"The judge said there is "no doubt there have been acts of vandalism and assaults" during the ICE crackdown in Chicago, but she could not agree that local law enforcement has been unable to handle the situation,...
annepmitchell.bsky.social
"The judge ruled there is no credible evidence of an organized rebellion in Illinois, despite multiple protests and some assaults against federal agents, nor was there any evidence the federal government has been unable to enforce the law without bringing in troops.
annepmitchell.bsky.social
...but said her decision comes down to a "credibility determination," and she found the Department of Homeland Security's assessment of recent events in the Chicago area to be unreliable.

The transcript isn't available yet but you can be sure I'll be ordering it and getting to you asap!

In the meantime, here is from the CBS news report:

"In a ruling from the bench, U.S. District Judge April Perry did not immediately explain what limits she was placing on the deployment,...

This *just* in... this is a ruling from the bench, which means not a written order, this is what the judge told the parties *in the courtroom* on the spot!

And speaking of the National Guard, the sworn statement by Illinois Assistant Attorney General Sherief Gaber is a geek’s delight, and warmed this geek’s heart with it’s full-on geekiness (ok ok, you get it.. geek stuff ahead).

It’s always great when you can impeach (that’s the legal term) someone with their own words that go against what they are trying to assert in court.

"It’s clear that ISP is the difference maker in this scenario, and we are grateful for their leadership.”

In other words, the Illinois State Police are fully capable of handling the situation, which suggests that there is *no need* for the National Guard to be there.

“To my knowledge, DHS did not have to intervene with any protesters Saturday or Sunday. The support from this unified command, and the communication with their on-site incident commander, has been great thus far this weekend. ...

And which *commends* and *thanks* the Illinois State Police (“ISP”) for taking care of, well, *all* incidents, and including the statement:
