Ah, but that is wise. As someone who has inherited some bits of that specific hunter-gatherer know how, we're taught that you only pick and eat the ones you are 110% sure are the good ones. Or else.

I stick the shovel in as deep as I can, move it sideways to get a gaping wound in the soil, stick a bulb in, and kick it shut. So according to currently gathered data, your way is preferred by 50% of population. Bulbs on sale are 100% great though.
